A deft 180\u00b0 turn brought us face-to-face with the table for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hirschvineyards.com\">Hirsch Vineyards<\/a>, a grower whose lots were featured by numerous other vintners throughout the afternoon. Tasting their eponymous <strong>2007 Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir <\/strong>was a rare treat, while their <strong>2008 Bohan Dillon Pinot Noir<\/strong> offered a tantalizing glimpse into its future.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hookandladderwinery.com\">Hook &amp; Ladder<\/a> pays tribute to owner Cecil De Loach\u2019s days as a San Francisco firefighter in the 1970s; at times, the extreme afternoon heat led one to wonder whether he might have to don his red helmet yet again. Nonetheless, his <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Third Alarm Reserve<\/strong> was a marvelous complement to the festivities. Reach back a tad further, owner James Ontiveros\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.native9wine.com\">Native\u2079 Wine<\/a> is a homage to his family\u2019s nine generations in California since 1781! Looking ahead, his estate-grown <strong>2008 Native\u2079 Pinot Noir Ontiveros Vineyard<\/strong> was a wine of considerable portent, while both\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>2007 Alta Maria Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard <\/strong>and the <strong>2007 Alta Maria Pinot Noir Santa Maria Vineyard<\/strong> proved eminently drinkable now.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \">There were a few wineries at this festival with whom I had no previous contact. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moshinvineyards.com\">Moshin Vineyards<\/a>, the first I encountered this afternoon, made a strong initial impression with their much-heralded <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Lot 4 Selection<\/strong>, as well as the<strong> 2007 Moshin Vineyards Pinot Noir Russian River<\/strong>. Though I had tried <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.morganwinery.com\">Morgan Winery<\/a>\u2019s other varietals on prior occasions, I was not aware that they were the only certified organic winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Dare I say that their <strong>2007 Double L Vineyard Hat Trick Pinot Noir<\/strong> was quite a mouthful?<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.merryedwards.com\">Merry Edwards<\/a> has long been revered as on of the wine world\u2019s pioneering women for her fabled Pinot Noirs. Her <strong>2007 <\/strong><strong>Klopp Ranch Pinot Noir <\/strong>proved excellent; the <strong>2007 Meredith Estate Pinot Noir<\/strong>, spectacular. It seems that at every Pinot tasting I attend, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kostabrowne.com\">Kosta Browne<\/a> is always the first to run out of wine. We wound our way to their table before the public tasting crowd filtered in and greedily two tastings each of their superb <strong>2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley<\/strong> and the vineyard-designated <strong>2007 Amber Ridge Pinot Noir<\/strong>. The <strong>2007 Expression 39\u00b0 Annahala<\/strong>, their Anderson Valley Pinot Noir figuratively seemed the more elevated of the two Pinots they had brought, though the <strong>2006 Expression 44\u00b0 Eola-Amity Hills <\/strong>was certainly a superb wine in its own right. Next up, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sojourncellars.com\">Sojourn Cellars<\/a> debuted their <strong>2008 Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyards,<\/strong> one of the most notable wines of the afternoon. At their neighboring table, the aptly-named <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smallvines.com\">Small Vines<\/a>, a boutique Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producer out of Sebastopol,\u00a0brought their striking<strong> 2007 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast MK Vineyard <\/strong>and an appealing <strong>2007 Small Vines Pinot Noir Russian River<\/strong>.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><span style=\"font-size: small; \">I\u2019ve known Andy <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peayvineyards.com\">Peay<\/a> <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small; \">(like myself, as well as my vexatious tasting companion, a fellow <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dartmouth.edu\">Dartmouth<\/a> alum)<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small; \">\u00a0for quite a number of years; I can always count on him to bring a little something outside of his announced pourings, especially at these single varietal affairs. A sip\u00a0of his <strong>2007 Peay Vineyards Estate Chardonnay<\/strong> provided a welcome palliative to the mounting heat, and it was a treat to preview his <strong>2007 La Bruma Estate Syrah<\/strong>. And, of course, befitting this event, his <strong>2007 Sea Scallop Estate Pinot Noir<\/strong> did nothing to disappoint. Another longtime acquaintance, journeyman winemaker David <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/vergariwines.com\">Vergari<\/a> brought a wide selection from his own label, including a couple of side-by-side comparisons. The <strong>2006 Ahh Brickhill Vineyard<\/strong> had considerable merit, while the <strong>2004 Ooh Bien Nacido<\/strong> clearly stood out as his most significant bottling this afternoon, a wine meant to be enjoyed over candlelight dinner, the means for which were generously furnished by his <strong><em>chandeli\u00e8re<\/em><\/strong> wife, Krassimira. Another Benziger offshoot, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.signaterra.com\">Signaterra<\/a> represents their fusion of the forces of Earth, Man, and Nature to create distinctly sustainable wines. Their trio of vineyard-designate wines poured here included the <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Bella Luna<\/strong>, the <strong>2007 Pinot Noir San Remo<\/strong> and their standout, the <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Giusti<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \">Nearby, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ketchamestate.com\">Ketcham Estate<\/a> is closely allied with Kosta Browne, sharing the same winemaker. Here his efforts shone brightly in the <strong>2007 Ketcham Estate Pinot Noir Russian River Valley<\/strong> but utterly glistened with the <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Ketcham Vineyard<\/strong>. Glistening may have been the visual effect the web designers for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cloudsrestpinotnoir.com\">Cloud Rest<\/a>\u00a0hoped to achieve; instead, the bloat of this infuriatingly slow multimedia presentation brought my <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/safari\">Safari browser<\/a> to a crashing halt<span style=\"font-weight: bold; \"><em style=\"outline-style: none; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; \">. I\u2019ve had the occasion to try several of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seasmokecellars.com\">Sea Smoke<\/a>\u2019s wines at on of the clubby Monday night Meet the Winemaker tastings at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.californiawinemerchant.com\">California Wine Merchant<\/a>, but was quite disappointed they had exhausted their supply of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #000000; \">2007 Pinot Noir Southing<span style=\"font-weight: normal; \">\u00a0by the time I made it to their table. Similarly, I\u2019ve tossed back a few glasses of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.roesslercellars.com\">Roessler<\/a>\u2019s <\/span>2006 Pinot Noir La Encantada<span style=\"font-weight: normal; \"> at San Francisco\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.districtsf.com\">District<\/a>; both their <\/span>2007 Pinot Noir Gap\u2019s Crown<span style=\"font-weight: normal; \"> and <\/span>2007 Pinot Noir Widdoes Vineyard<span style=\"font-weight: normal; \"> held up with equal aplomb.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \">I can\u2019t remember a major tasting I\u2019ve recently attended where Santa Cruz\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahsvineyard.com\">Sarah\u2019s Vineyard<\/a> wasn\u2019t a presence; nonetheless, I was more than happy to revisit their <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains<\/strong> and the utterly splendid<strong> 2007 Pinot Nor Santa Clara Valley<\/strong>. A few tables over, I made the acquaintance of brothers Aaron and Jesse Inman, nephews of Pinot legend\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.augustbriggswines.com\">August Briggs<\/a> and founders of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.romililly.com\">Romililly<\/a>, a 350 case operation that featured the highly commendable 2008 Romililly Pinot Noir Russian River Valley. Not much further down the row of tables, I followed David Vergari\u2019s suggestion and visited with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paliwineco.com\">Pali Wine Co.<\/a>, a Lompoc undertaking. Like Elevation, Pali sources single vineyard fruit from major Pinot Noir AVA from the Central Coast to Oregon. Their 2007 vintage alone included 13 different Pinot bottlings, represented this afternoon solely by the <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Turner Vineyard<\/strong>, a Santa Rita Hills selection. The next vintage was pared down considerably, with two of the four Pinots produced present: the commendable <strong>2008 Pinot Noir Huntington<\/strong> from Santa Barbara and,\u00a0<em><strong>de rigueur<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; \">, the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal; \">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><strong>2008 Pinot Noir Bluffs<\/strong> from Russian River Valley. Much to my relief, a chilled 2008 Pali Chardonnay offered a respite from both the heat and the orthodoxy of the Pinot focus.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \">Don\u2019t get me wrong\u2014I am not disparaging of Pinot Noir; eventually, however, any tasting with but a single varietal makes making distinctions a considerable challenge. Happily, the best counter to this monolithicism was the ever-popular <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortrossvineyard.com\">Fort Ross<\/a>, cooling things down with both their 2006 Chardonnay Fort Ross Vineyard and their 2008 Ros\u00e9 of Pinot Noir. Their <strong>2006 Pinotage Fort Ross Vineyard<\/strong> easily matched the numerous versions of this varietal I had sampled at a recent South African wine tasting, while their true Pinot, the <strong>2006 Pinot Noir: Symposium<\/strong> easily rated among the top ten wines of the afternoon.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \">A sparkling wine, like a Blanc de Noir from Rodney Strong\u2019s onetime affiliate, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pipersonoma.com\">Piper Sonoma<\/a>, or\u00a0Marimar Torres\u2019\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gloriaferrer.com\">Gloria Ferrer<\/a>, would have been both welcome and appropriate at this stage, but, alas, it was not to be. Still, her namesake <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marimarestate.com\">Marimar Estate<\/a> managed to keep this temperate with their organically-farmed <strong>2006 Pinot Noir Don Miguel Vineyard<\/strong> and its maternal corollary, the <strong>2006 Pinot Noir Do\u00f1a Margarita Vineyard<\/strong>. In 1999, sparkling wine producer <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chandon.com\">Domaine Chandon<\/a> found they had an excess of Pinot Meunier and bottled it as a single varietal; we were so impressed with this bottling, we bought a case just for Thanksgiving dinner. Tasting the <strong>2007 Domaine Chandon Pinot Meunier<\/strong> at this festival proved more than nostalgic.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \">While on the subject of nostalgia, this afternoon afforded me the chance to taste <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdonatiello.com\">C. Donatiello<\/a>, a rebranding of the former Belvedere Winery where I did my first bottling in 1990. The head of Bill Hambrecht\u2019s restructured wine operations, Chris Donatiello held forth at his table with his <strong>2006 C. Donatiello Pinot Noir Russian River Valley<\/strong> and the more distinctive <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Maddie\u2019s Vineyard.<span style=\"font-weight: normal; \">\u00a0Just down the row, C\u00e9cile Lemerle-<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.derbeswines.com\">Derb\u00e8s<\/a> offered her <\/span>2006 Derb\u00e8s Pinot Noir Russian River<span style=\"font-weight: normal; \">, while Sebastopol\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dunahwinery.com\">DuNah<\/a> showcased both the <\/span>2006 DuNah Estate Pinot Noir <\/strong>and<strong> the 2006 Dunah Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard<span style=\"font-weight: normal; \">.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal; \">In addition to its lineup of seven different Pinot Noirs, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dlmwine.com\/\">De La Montanya Estate<\/a> produces a dizzying array of varietals from Primitivo and Zinfandel to Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. I was content to limit myself to their 2007 Pinot Noir Tina\u2019s Vineyard and the formidable 2007 De La Montanya Pinot Noir reserve. At the other end of the spectrum, I delighted in sampling the\u00a0<strong style=\"outline-style: none; \">2007\u00a0<span style=\"outline-style: none; \"><a style=\"outline-style: none; \" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmondwines.com\">Desmond Estate<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Pinot Noir Russian River Valley<\/strong>, a single production of only 80 cases.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \">A couple of Pinot Noir superstars came through like\u2014well, Pinot Noir superstars. Hank Skewis showed off a quartet from his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.skewis.com\">Skewis<\/a> portfolio, ranging from Anderson Valley\u2019s <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Corby Vineyard <\/strong>and Russian River\u2019s <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Lingenfelder Vineyard<\/strong> to the 2006 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley Reserve and the wondrous <strong>2006 Pinot Noir Salzgeber-Chan Vineyard<\/strong>. Likewise, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.garyfarrellwines.com\">Gary Farrell<\/a>\u2019s renowned dedication to Russian River fruit was exemplified by his <strong>2006 Gary Farrell Pinot Noir Russian River Valley<\/strong> and his <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Hallberg Vineyard<\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; \"><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; \"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.klwines.com\">K &amp; L Wine Merchants<\/a> are exclusive wine purveyors renowned throughout the Bay Area. Named in homage to Roman goddess of gaiety, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.laetitiawine.com\">Laetitia Vineyards<\/a> paired its <strong>2006 Pinot Noir La Colline<\/strong> with its distinctive <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Reserve du Domaine<\/strong>.
