The interesting thread that tied each of these operations wasn\u2019t their wines but the striking facilities that house their operations.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">I first stopped by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lahondawinery.com\">La Honda Winery<\/a>  in Redwood City<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\"> to take in what has to be the most eclectic structure this side of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tobinjames.com\/index.html\">Tobin James<\/a>. La Honda\u2019s partner Don Modica framed portions of several buildings on contiguous tracts to create a warehouse-like interior into which other structures appear to intrude. The overall effect seems much like a film stage, illusory yet compelling at the same time. I had met assistant winemaker Colin McNany at a Santa Cruz tasting earlier this year, but was happy this time to meet winemaker\/owner Ken Wornick for what turned out to be one of the most energized discussions of <span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><strong><span mce_style=\"color: #006633;\" style=\"color: #006633;\">Sostevinobile<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong> I have had to date. Moreover, the selection of wines made my jaunt down the Peninsula well worth my while, with the <strong>2007 Pinot Noir <\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><strong>Sequence <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">and their new <strong>2006 Cabernet Sauvignon\/Sangiovese Modica Estate<\/strong> striking my particular fancy. I also greatly enjoy their <strong>2006 Meritage<\/strong>, a deft blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, <span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Cabernet<\/span> Franc from the Windsor Oaks Vineyard in the Chalk Hill AVA.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">With enough time to make one more stop, I elected to shoot across Hwy 101 and track down the new headquarters for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.woodsidevineyards.com\">Woodside Vineyards<\/a>, a small-scale producer I had long meant to seek out<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\">. Like La Honda, the name somewhat belied its location, but the recent move to Menlo Park freed the winery from a number of local restrictions, notably a maximum allowable production scale of a mere 2,000 cases. Woodside\u2019s new owner, Buff Giurlani, has transformed an industrial warehouse near the foot of the Dumbarton Bridge into an airy showcase for vintage auto collectors alongside his expanded winery production and tasting room, with the intent of creating event space<span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">, not unlike the nearby Museum of Aviation in San Carlos. With this expansion of the winery\u2019s capacity, he and winemaker Brian Caseldon are looking to move beyond their current inventory of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Port and sparkling wines to include a number of Italian varietals, including Sangiovese and Dolcetto. But, for now, the noteworthy holdovers from their former facility that I had the chance to sample: the <strong>2007 Woodside Chardonnay<\/strong>, the <strong>2004 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, and the <strong>2004 Woodside Port<\/strong>, more than sufficed.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">I finished this day with a half-mile swim at the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pacclub.com\">Pacific Athletic Club<\/a>  in Redwood Shores, a much-needed tonic after my major bicycle excursion<em> (documented in my last entry) <\/em>between the two major wine tastings the day before. I had            forgotten this winery\u2019s connection to the Disney Family, thus was            unprepared for the sheer opulence of the estate. Perched on a hilltop just after Silverado Trail crosses into Yountville, this spectacular Mediterranean edifice offers sweeping views of their 93 planted acres and most of the Stags Leap District lying just beyond. Merely to sit out on the patio leaves one feeling quite regal, if but for a fleeting moment.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Of course, the wines lived up to the richness of this setting. We cooled down first with the <strong>2008 Miller Ranch Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong>, the delightful <strong>2008 Estate Chardonnay<\/strong>, and, for good measure, the <strong>2008 Sangiovese Rosato<\/strong> before tackling a serious array of red wines, starting with the much-anticipated <strong>2006 Estate Sangiovese<\/strong> that Elena had alluded to when we\u2019d first met. Elena hadn\u2019t mentioned Silverado\u2019s amazing Super Tuscan, the <strong>2006 Fantasia<\/strong> before, and naturally, this Sangiovese\/Cabernet Sauvignon blend led into a selection of select Cabernets, starting with the <strong>2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>. After trying the 2006 vintage, she offered me a rare vertical from the late 1990s. While the 1997 and 1998 vintages lived up to my expectations for a Napa Valley Cab, the largely unheralded <strong>1999 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> was quite the unexpected pleasure.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">I might have worked my way through half a dozen more wines, but I was past due for the Pulse Tasting at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acmefinewines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Acme Fine Wines<\/a>  in St. Helena, where scion Justin Stephens of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drstephenswines.com\" target=\"_blank\">D.R. Stephens Wines<\/a>  pour a trio of his luxuriant wines, including the<strong> 2008 Estate Chardonnay<\/strong>, his <strong>2007 DR II Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> and the breathtaking <strong>2006 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Moose Valley Vineyard<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\">. Next, I wound my way down to Bardessono, where Erin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lail-vineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Lail<\/a>  was on hand to pair her <strong>2009 Blueprint Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong> with the array of artists Andrea had included in her opening. I managed to take in a quick dinner at one of Yountville\u2019s lesser-known caf\u00e9s before taking in a promised stop at Michael Polenske\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maisonry.com\" target=\"_blank\">Ma(i)sonry<\/a>, the venerable stone edifice he converted to a gallery and tasting room he describes as \u201cpairing artisan wines with exquisite art and furnishings in an historic setting.\u201d While not as grandiose as Jan Shrem\u2019<span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\">s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clospegase.com\/\">Clos P\u00e9gase<\/a><\/span> nor quite as imposing as Greg Martin\u2019s artifact-laden <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinestate.com\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Estate<\/a>, Ma(i)sonry manages to create an enveloping atmosphere that lends itself exquisitely to sampling the artisan wines its Vintner Collective features. Most of these have appeared in this blog at one time or another, and given the exhaustive tasting I was facing the next day, I limited myself to a half-glass of the <strong>2007 Contrarian<\/strong>, the Pomerol-style Meritage from Polenske\u2019s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackbirdvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Blackbird Vineyards<\/a>. The perfect coda to a well-traveled day<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">I checked out of my downtown Napa hotel at 11 AM, but left my car in their parking lot for the afternoon<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\">. After many years of contemplation, I had decided to wind my way up the Silverado Trail on my Trek, a 22-mile pedal from point of departure to destination, with a formidable return trip after three hours of wine tasting and feasting.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">The ride from Napa to St. Helena could not have been more pleasant. Despite its formidable length, the road remained relatively flat the entire stretch\u2014enough so that I never had to shift out of high gear! The temperature hovered around 75\u00b0 F, maybe a tad less, and a cool but gentle breeze from the rear kept conditions ideal. I clocked in a markedly quicker pace than the 1:56 that my iPhone\u2019s GPS estimated, and would have finished closer to an hour and a half, had I not stopped briefly at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juddshill.com\" target=\"_blank\">Judd\u2019s Hill<\/a>  and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chimneyrock.com\" target=\"_blank\">Chimney Rock<\/a> along the way. As with cycling in San Francisco, the ability to cover a known route at a leisurely pace and with sightlines unimpeded yielded a plethora of discoveries, like the hidden gem of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.napawineproject.com\/Napa-Wineries\/?id=563\" target=\"_blank\">Razi Winery<\/a>  or the new home for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crushpadwine.com\">Crushpad<\/a>   being built at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silveradotrailwine.com\" target=\"_blank\">Silverado Trail Wine Studio<\/a>. Ever mindful of Sostevinobile\u2019s ecological commitment, I made mental notes of the water levels<em> (or lack thereof) <\/em>of the many creeks I crossed, surveyed the various arrays of solar installations and CCOF-tagged vineyards, and promised myself I would return to make a more detailed exploration when not so pressed for time.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Just before 2 PM, I arrived at the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.charleskrug.com\"><span>Charles Krug Vineyard<\/span><\/a>   for the <a href=\"http:\/\/howellmountain.org\/eblast\/10_06_Tasteof_HM.html\" target=\"_blank\">Taste of Howell Mountain Wine<\/a>  Tasting Garden Party &amp; Auction. This annual benefit for the Howell Mountain Elementary School marks a special convergence of professional, social and charitable interests in Napa Valley. This year\u2019s event precluded the Howell Mountain Tasting that usually takes place later in the summer in San Francisco, so it especially behooved me to attend and renew acquaintances with the many vintners and winery owners I had met at last year\u2019s functions.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Remarkably, of the 30 wineries on hand, only one had not participated in last year\u2019s tasting, so I beelined over to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bremerfamilywinery.com\"><span>Bremer Family<\/span><\/a>\u2019s table just as soon as I had locked my bicycled, registered, and downed the glass of chilled<strong> 2009 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong> with which Charles Krug greets attendees. Bremer turns out to be an extraordinary winery<em> (not that most of the wineries on hand could easily qualify as extraordinary in a less comparable setting)<\/em>, with a focus on Bordeaux reds. I felt fortunate to sample both their <strong>2004 Howell Mountain Merlot <\/strong>alongside their striking <strong>2004 Los Posados Merlot<\/strong>, as well as contrasting the <strong>2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet S<\/strong><\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><strong><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">a<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><strong>uvignon<\/strong> with their delightful <strong>2003 Seek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>. I do look forward to trying their vintages from benchmark years.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Little of the literature I\u2019ve encountered extols the virtues of the 2006 vintage, but quite a number of the wine<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">r<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">ies on hand showed how even a non-storied vintage can garner tremendous respect, especially if it heralds from one of California\u2019s premier AVAs<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\">. While my resampling of the <strong>2005 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertsandrogers.com\" target=\"_blank\">Roberts + Rogers<\/a>  showed remarkable consistency from last year, the <strong>2006 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> was clearly a more compelling vintage. I also found the <strong>2006 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laderavineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Ladera<\/a>  quite excellent, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wskeyes.com\" target=\"_blank\">W.S. Keyes<\/a>  made as profound a statement with their <strong>2006 Merlot Howell Mountain<\/strong>. Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lajotavineyardco.com\" target=\"_blank\">La Jota<\/a>  demonstrated superb vinification with each, though I gave a slight nod to their<strong> 2006 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> over their <strong>2006 Howell Mountain Merlot<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Denis Malbec\u2019s pedigree from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateau-latour.com\" target=\"_blank\">Ch\u00e2teau Latour<\/a> has been well-documented and I would have stopped by his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notrevin.com\" target=\"_blank\">Notre Vin<\/a>  table even if I hadn\u2019t received his e-mail invite just the day before. As anticipated, his <strong>2005<\/strong><\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><strong><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"> Howell Mountain<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><strong> Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, artfully blended with&nbsp;83% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, drank splendidly. As did the organically grown <strong>2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Estate<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nealvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Neal Family Vineyards<\/a>, an unblended bottling. In addition to their delightful, single-varietal <strong>2007 Merlot<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oshaughnessywinery.com\" target=\"_blank\">O\u2019Shaughnessy Wine Estate<\/a>  deserved kudos for the authenticity of their Bordeaux-style bottling of the <strong>2006 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, a historic assemblage of&nbsp;78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Carm\u00e9n\u00e8re, 2% St. Macaire (!), and 1% Cabernet Franc. Calling one\u2019s wine the <strong>2007            Howell Mountain Zinfandel Yee Haw Vintage<\/strong> may evoke images of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lil-abner.com\/\">Li\u2019l Abner<\/a>,            Dogpatch, and Kickapoo Joy Juice, but this delectable bottling from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lamborn.com\/\">Lamborn Family            Vineyards<\/a>  is anything but Boone\u2019s Farm. Both their <strong>2006 Cabernet            Sauvignon, Vintage IV<\/strong> and the <span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><strong>2005 Cabernet            Sauvignon, Vintage III<\/strong> struck me as being quite cellar-worthy, as well<\/span><\/span>. Meanwhile, as if to refute those skeptics who believe Zin doesn\u2019t age, Duane D. So too did host Charles Krug new <strong>2007 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> show intimations of greatness. And while beneficent owner Gordon Getty dozed perilously at a nearby picnic table<em> (oh, if only his attendant hadn\u2019t moved the somnolent billionaire out of the sweltering midday heat\u2014I might have hit him up for the $3,000,000 in funding <span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><strong><span mce_style=\"color: #006633;\" style=\"color: #006633;\">Sostevinobile<\/span><\/strong><\/span> is still seeking!)<\/em>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cadewinery.com\">CADE Winery<\/a>  sizzled with their <strong>2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain<\/strong>.<span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">I found myself more impressed with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.summitlakevineyards.com\">Summit Lake<\/a>  this time around. Their <strong>2006 Emily Kestrel Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> was a pleasure indeed, but the <strong>2006 Zinfandel<\/strong> really put them on the map. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redcapvineyards.com\">Red Cap<\/a>\u2019s lone effort, the <strong>2006 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, nonetheless made them a player with which to be reckoned, while the indubitable <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitecottageranch.com\"><span>White Cottage<\/span><\/a> proffered their own <strong>2006 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>. Another Howell Mountain stalwart, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pinanapavalley.com\">Pi\u00f1a<\/a>  <span class=\"boldText\">impressed, as usual, with their 2<strong>006 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Buckeye Vineyard<\/strong> while <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.highlandswinery.com\">Highlands<\/a>  excelled with their <strong>2006&nbsp;Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Howell Mountain<\/strong>.<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Amid the overall superior quality of virtually every wine I sampled, a handful of vintages distinguished themselves as a cut above. Once again, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cimarossa.com\" target=\"_blank\">Cimarossa<\/a> dazzled with their proprietary Cabernet, the <strong>2006 Riva Di Ponente Estate Wine<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outpostwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Outpost<\/a>  contributed an extraordinary Chardonnay, the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2007 La Blonde<\/strong><\/span>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertcraigwine.com\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Craig<\/a>\u2019s <strong>2008 Howell Mountain Napa Valley Zinfandel<\/strong> tasted almost Cabernet-like in its texture and complexity, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spencevineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">SPENCE Vineyards<\/a>  brought their <strong>2006 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, an amazing expression of this varietal. The<strong> 2005 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornerstonecellars.com\" target=\"_blank\">Cornerstone Cellars<\/a> proved just as enticing, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bravantevineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Bravante Vineyards<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wineandspiritsmagazine.com\" target=\"_blank\">Wine &amp; Spirits\u2019<\/a>  Winery of the Year in 2007, made a most profound statement with their <strong>2006 Trio<\/strong>, a Merlot-based wine with balancing infusions of Cabernet Franc and <\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Cabernet <\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Sauvignon.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">The source of Robert Craig\u2019s Zinfandel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blacksears.com\" target=\"_blank\">Black Sears<\/a>, demonstrated their profound \u0153nological skills with their own<strong> 2006 Estate Zinfandel<\/strong>. Merlot virtuoso <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duckhorn.com\" target=\"_blank\">Duckhorn Vineyards<\/a>  impressed with their modestly titled Meritage, the <strong>2005 Howell Mountain Napa Valley Red Wine<\/strong>, artfully blending 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. And reborn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlaspeak.com\" target=\"_blank\">Atlas Peak<\/a>  continued to demonstrate how the skills of their revitalization with their much-lauded <strong>2005 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>. <br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">As happened at Silverado, the <strong>1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dunnvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Dunn Vineyards<\/a>  proved quite the revelation from a somewhat obscure year. And certainly a rather obscure varietal for Howell Mountain was the nonetheless wonderful<strong> 2006 Petite Sirah <\/strong>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retrocellars.com\" target=\"_blank\">Retro Cellars<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Maybe I should have spent less time trying to figure a way to reintroduce myself to Gordon Getty <em>(we had met some 22 years ago at a fundraiser at his Presidio Heights mansion, where soporific Presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hri.org\/hri\/dukakis.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Dukakis<\/a>  had me dozing in my seat this time)<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\">. Maybe I should learn to read the fine points of a program before mapping my schedule. I only had time to sample the elegant <strong>2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Ranch<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stclement.com\" target=\"_blank\">St. Clement<\/a>  before we were briskly ushered indoors for the two-hour auction. Regrettably, I can only note the presence and generous contribution of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkenstone.com\" target=\"_blank\">Arkenstone<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluehallvineyard.com\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Hall<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cakebread.com\" target=\"_blank\">Cakebread Cellars<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haberfamilyvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Haber Vineyards<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howellatthemoonwine.com\" target=\"_blank\">Howell at the Moon<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rutherfordgrove.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rutherford Grove<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Tor Kenward<\/a>\u2014all of whom I covered last year and, with several, at other tastings. I will strive to highlight them in subsequent entries.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">We climbed to the second floor of Charles Krug\u2019s renovated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sthelenastar.com\/articles\/2008\/04\/24\/features\/food_and_wine\/doc481048dc923a5359702542.txt\" target=\"_blank\">1881 Carriage House<\/a>, where glasses of much-needed sparkling wine were liberally poured alongside an assortment of Howell Mountain and other donated wines, plus an array of desserts that included caffeine-laced brownies! This magnificent edifice features a naturally illuminated, vaulted ceiling that seems almost ecclesiastical<em> (little wonder why it is often rented out for vineyard weddings)<\/em> and served as a perfect coda to the architectural focus of my week.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">I stumbled upon a pair of interesting wines that had not been featured at the tasting proper before I settled in: the <strong>2005 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villahermosacellars.com\" target=\"_blank\">Villa Hermosa<\/a> and the striking <strong>2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fleurywinery.com\" target=\"_blank\">Fleury<\/a>, whose website extols their wines as \u201c100% good juice.\u201d Auctioneer <a href=\"http:\/\/reynolds-buckley.com\/about\/greg-quiroga.html\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Quiroga<\/a>, a fellow veteran of <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.sfgate.com\/2005-08-05\/entertainment\/17385679_1_three-hour-workshop-improvisational-teach\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Cranna\u2019s Improv Workshop<\/a>, regaled the crowd as he cajoled them into bidding for lots that ranged from 16 of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winespectator.com\/webfeature\/show\/id\/Californias-New-Generation-Thomas-Brown_1760\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Brown<\/a>\u2019s acclaimed wines to a sports extravaganza dinner at Bottega Restaurant Baseball Hall of Famer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/seaveto01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Seaver<\/a><em>  (owner of<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seaverfamilyvineyards,com\" target=\"_blank\"><em> GTS Vineyards<\/em><\/a><em>) <\/em>and other sports luminaries involved in the wine industry. By the end of the event, over $85,000 had ben raised, an increase of 10% over last year\u2019s auction.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">Growing up on Long Island, I was transfixed throughout the 1969 baseball season, as Seaver led the New York Mets to their first winning season and an astounding World series championship. I was gratified, years later, to learn that Tom had taken up the game of squash and then viticulture, two of my more pronounced passions.
