Suffice it to say that I\u2019ve experienced more decency and humanity in just twenty minutes working with winery folks as I have in over twenty years enduring the latter-day\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: georgia; \"><a style=\"outline-style: none; \" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amctv.com\/originals\/madmen\">Mad Men<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of San Francisco. Not that I\u2019d ever go Ted Kaczynski on the various malefactors<em> (perceived or real)<\/em> I have endured, but I do often indulge myself in fantasizing over serving up some just desserts.<br style=\"outline-style: none; \" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">The torpid economy in which we continue to languish has compelled nearly every food and drink purveyor I know to offer some form of a Happy Hour to entice a financially struggling clientele to fill their seats. Ever the contrarian, I am proposing to hold Misery Hour at <span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><strong style=\"outline-style: none; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; color: #006633; \" mce_style=\"color:#006633;\">Sostevinobile<\/span><\/strong><\/span>, where people gainfully employed in the ignoble sciences <em>(investment banking, corporate law, brokerage, and, of course, advertising) <\/em>would be charged double regular prices from 5-7 PM. My point in spinning this little snippet of self-indulgence is to note that, clever as it may sound, Misery Hour stands as much chance of happening as does encountering a bad professional wine tasting in the Napa Valley.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    <\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">The latest            validation of this contention took place this past Wednesday at the reconfigured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rubiconestate.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rubicon Estate<\/a>, which Francis Ford Coppola has transformed from the previously named Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery to a deluxe showcase for his movie memorabilia, as well as his most prestigious wines. 36 member<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"> winerie<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">s of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rutherforddust.org\/rds\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Rutherford Dust Society<\/a>  gathered in the Historic Barrel Room at the Grand Estate to celebrate <strong>A Day in the Dust<\/strong>, a trade tasting of the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignons and other Bordelaise-style wines from Napa\u2019s Rutherford AVA. A more fitting way to celebrate Bastille Day, I could not imagine<em> (apart from guillotining a handful of Creative Directors whose names I need not mention)<\/em>.<br style=\"outline-style: none; \" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">                                                                                                                                                                                    <\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">I hadn\u2019t been to the winery since its transformation, and it took a couple of drive-bys before I located it vastly understated gateway <em>(in contrast, Niebaum-Coppola\u2019s frontage had stood as an unmistakable landmark on Highway 29)<\/em>. An inner ring of tables featured the handful of Sauvignon Blancs several of the wineries had included, while the outer configuration contained <\/span>their red wine samples. Logic dictated that I taste in the same manner, sampling the smaller array of white wines first. <br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">First, I meandered over to find the table for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.meanderwines.com\">Meander<\/a>, my first contact with this winery, which could have won me over simply with the name for its Sauvignon Blanc, the <strong>2009 Conspire<\/strong> <em>(but the wine itself proved even more compelling)<\/em>. Next, I zipped over to the station where <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/94574wine.com\">94574 Wine<\/a>  poured its debut <strong>2009 Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong>, a stark yet compelling expression that showed little of the grapefruit or grassy tones I find can mar the varietal.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">I made a note to myself to circle back to the tables for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aowinery.com\">Alpha Omega<\/a>  and for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fleurywinery.com\">Fleury Estate<\/a>, wineries I have sampled on several other occasions, then rounded the corner to try the <strong>2009 Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.roundpond.com\">Round Pond<\/a>  was pouring at its white table. Next to them, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rutherfordgrove.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rutherford Grove <\/a> poured a superb <strong>2009 <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>Pestoni Estate <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong>, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lieffwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Lieff<\/a>  opted to share their <strong>2009 Rutherford Crossroad Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \">I\u2019d tried the <strong>2009 Rutherford Sauvignon Blan<\/strong>c from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longmeadowranch.com\" target=\"_blank\">Long Meadow Ranch<\/a>  at their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longmeadowranch.com\/Farmstead-Restaurant\" target=\"_blank\">Farmstead Restaurant<\/a> recently but was pleased to resample it in this different setti<span style=\"font-size: 13px; \">n<span style=\"font-family: georgia; \">g.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"> Nor did a different venue affect my favorable impression of the newly-released <strong>2009 Fum\u00e9 Blanc Rutherford<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jrewines.com\" target=\"_blank\">John Robert Eppler<\/a>, a frequent denizen of the tastings at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockwallwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rock Wall<\/a> I have chronicled here. On the other hand, having recently tasted both of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honigwine.com\" target=\"_blank\">Honig<\/a>\u2019s Sauvignon Blanc, I decided to forgo a reevaluation and wait for their red table pours.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Perhaps I should have skipped the grapefruity <strong>2009 Rutherford Estate Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sawyercellars.com\" target=\"_blank\">Sawyer Cellars<\/a>  poured, but having espied this winery along Highway 29 for several years now, my curiosity got the better of me. I overcame my disappointment with their silky <strong>2007 Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, however. First, however, I introduced myself to the Raudabaughs of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.12cwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">12C Wines<\/a>\u00a0and sampled their lush <strong>2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III<\/strong>, a single varietal boutique producer.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \">I had hoped that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drstephenswines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">D. R. Stephens<\/a>\u00a0would be pouring the\u00a0<strong>2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Moose Valley Vineyard\u00a0<\/strong>that succeeded the extraordinary 2006 vintage of the same that had wowed the crowd at Acme\u2019s Pulse Tasting a few weeks back, but had no complaints at settling for their <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Walther River Block<\/strong>. And while almost any of Larry <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pinanapavalley.com\">Pi\u00f1a<\/a>\u2019s wines would have suited the occasion, I was delighted with his <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Firehouse Vineyard<\/strong>. equally impressive was the<strong> 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Bosch\u00e9 Vineyard<\/strong> that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freemarkabbey.com\">Freemark Abbey<\/a>, my late friend <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffwarren.com\">Jim Warren<\/a>\u2019s former winery, poured alongside their <strong>2006 Petite Sirah Wood Ranch<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Another friend who is very much alive and running his own winery, John Williams, featured a trio of wines from his pioneering organic winery, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.frogsleap.com\">Frog\u2019s Leap<\/a>: the <strong>2007 Petite Sirah<\/strong>, an impressive <strong>2007 Merlot Rutherford<\/strong>, and the <strong>2007 Rutherford<\/strong>, a proprietary Cabernet Sauvignon with a generous dollop of Cabernet Franc. Also on hand, fellow <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfbayclub.com\">Bay Club <\/a> member Greg Martin served up a trio of his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.martinestate.com\">Martin Estate<\/a>  vintages: the<strong> 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Bacchanal<\/strong>, the exceptional <strong>2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve<\/strong>, and a new release\u2014the 2<strong>008 Cabernet Ros\u00e9<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Despite my frequent trips to Napa, a number of the wineries on hand had escaped my awareness<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \">. Nonetheless, Monticello Vineyards greatly impressed me with their <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Tietjen Vineyards<\/strong>, as did <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scarlettwine.com\">McG Cellars<\/a>  with both the <strong>2007 Scarlett Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> and their yet-to-be released <strong>2007 Scarlett Cabernet Reserve<\/strong>. One of Corley Family\u2019s prestigious labels, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corleyfamilynapavalley.com\" target=\"_blank\">Monticello Vineyards<\/a>, upheld the Jeffersonian wine tradition with their <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Tietjen Vineyard<\/strong>. Of course, the name <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pedemontecellars.com\" target=\"_blank\">Pedemonte Cellars<\/a>  begs a Sangiovese and, indeed, their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pedemontecellars.com\/pdf\/pedemonte_2008_adagio_factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Adagio<\/a>  is a Sangiovese\/Syrah\/Cabernet Sauvignon blend, but on this afternoon, they only featured their noteworthy <strong>2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford<\/strong>, followed by its superior successor, the <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Speaking of Sangiovese, I may have finally wrangled a taste of the elusive <strong>2008 Stagliano Estate Sangiovese<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staglinfamily.com\" target=\"_blank\">Staglin Family Vineyards<\/a>  produces. For the time being, though, I had to \u201csettle\u201d for the pleasure of their <strong>2008 Salus Estate Chardonnay<\/strong>, as well as the equally seductive <strong>2006 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> and the <strong>2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>. And though some may consider it bad form to show up your guests, host Rubicon Estate clearly affirmed the profound depth of its \u0153nological mastery with its flagship <strong>2007 Rubicon<\/strong>, an organically-grown Meritage.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">I was a bit surprised that more wineries did not feature a Meritage but focused instead on straight varietals. Agustin Huneeus\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quintessa.com\" target=\"_blank\">Quintessa<\/a>, however, blends eight different estate lots of Cabernet Sauvignon with their Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carm\u00e9n\u00e8re, richly exemplified by their soon-to-be released <strong>2007 Quintessa<\/strong>, plus a preview from the 2008 barrel sample. Another surprising<em> <\/em>absence was the paucity of Zinfandel being poured, though Julie Johnson\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tressabores.com\" target=\"_blank\">Tres Sabores<\/a> did more than make up for this omission with its organically grown <strong>2007 Estate Zinfandel <\/strong>and its exceptional counterpoint, the <strong>2006 Rutherford Perspective Cabernet Sauvignon.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">I like allusions\u2014great fodder for the myriad digressions that frequent readers know populate this blog. Though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whwines.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">William Harrison Winery<\/a>  bears as much connection to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about\/presidents\/williamhenryharrison\/\" target=\"_blank\">9th President of the United States<\/a>  as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johntylerwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">John Tyler Wines<\/a>   has with his successor, their wines proved to be far hardier than Old Tippecanoe, who lasted but a month in office. Their exemplary <strong>2007 Cabernet Franc Rutherford<\/strong> and the\u00a0<span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford<\/strong> were complemented by the artfully blended <strong>2006 Estate Rutherford Red<\/strong>, a subtle m\u00e9lange of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec, and 8% Merlot. And if only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slaughterhousecellars.com\" target=\"_blank\">Slaughterhouse Cellars<\/a>  would blend a full quintet of Bordeaux varietals and call it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vonnegutweb.com\/sh5\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Slaughterhouse-Five<\/a>! Still, I was immensely please to discover both their <strong>2007 Cabernet Franc Rutherford <\/strong>and the truly well-crafted <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Circling back to revisit wineries who had poured Sauvignon Blanc, I was a bit surprised that I preferred Lieff\u2019s <strong>2006 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon <\/strong>to their 2007 vintage, but the test of time will tell which will prove the more striking long-term. Meander\u2019s <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Morisoli Vineyard<\/strong> may not have as mischievous a moniker as its Sauv Blanc but tasted equally delightful. Also in harmony with its white confr\u00e8re, Round Pond\u2019s <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon <\/strong>lived up to its advanced billing, while Honig showed itself quite adept on the red side with its <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Campbell Vineyard<\/strong>.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hewittvineyard.com\">Hewitt Vineyard<\/a>  is an autonomous label produced by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.provenancevineyards.com\">Provenance<\/a>, which had separately poured its <strong>2009 Sauvignon Blanc Rutherford<\/strong>; Hewitt\u2019s single vineyard effort, the <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford<\/strong>, certainly validated the limits of this focus. Provenance and Hewitt are two of the better labels within Diageo\u2019s vast portfolio, as is one of Napa\u2019s crown jewels, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bvwines.com\">Beaulieu Vineyards<\/a>. To the perplexity of most attendees, <strong>A Day in the Dust<\/strong>, though scheduled until 5 PM, suddenly announced it was ceasing to pour at 4:30, which meant several of the wineries began folding their table shortly after 4. BV had quit before I had a chance to circle back to their table, meaning I missed out on the <strong>2007 Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon\u00a0<\/strong>and their ubiquitous other Cabs, but a bit of legerdemain rewarded me with a taste of the <strong>2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Clone 6<\/strong>, an exceptional rarity.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">The abrupt end to the affair also meant I missed out on familiar labels like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elmolinowinery.com\">El Molino<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sullivanwine.com\">Sullivan Vineyards<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trincheronapavalley.com\">Trinchero Napa Valley<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanantoniowinery.com\">Riboli Family<\/a>  <em>(not certain whether they manned a table, despite the program listing)<\/em>, and, most regrettably, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heitzcellar.com\">Heitz Cellars<\/a>. I did manage to sample <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.florasprings.com\">Flora Springs<\/a>\u2019 <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Hillside Reserve<\/strong> before they closed, as well as a pair of wines from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peju.com\">Peju Province<\/a>, the <strong>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve<\/strong> and an intriguing, almost sweet <strong>2006 Cabernet Sauvignon H. B. Vineyard<\/strong> my tasting notes describe as \u201ccandy.\u201d Not sure whether Peju will appreciate that attribution or ask for my head when they read this.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Given<\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; \"> <strong>A Day in the Dust<\/strong> took place on Bastille Day, I needed a contrived segue to bring this entry to a close, but not before commenting on my final stop en route back to San Francisco. My fellow scribe Liza Zimmerman apprised me of the French national celebration to which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.closduval.com\">Clos du Val<\/a>  had invited the wine press, so donning my proverbial blogger\u2019s beret, I followed her down Silverado Trail and joined the <strong><em>grande f\u00eate<\/em><\/strong>. Somehow, in between the repeated rounds of shucked oysters from the justly celebrated <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hogislandoysters.com\/farm\/home\">Hog Island Farm<\/a>, I managed to sample their proprietary S\u00e9millon-Chardonnay blend, the <strong>2008 Ariadne<\/strong> <em>(\u1f08\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac\u03b4\u03bd\u03b7 was the wife of Poseidon who abetted Theseus in his quest to kill the Minotaur, her association with wine an elusive part of classical mythology)<\/em>, the <strong>2007 Carneros Pinot Noir<\/strong>, and a pull-out-all-the-stops selection from their library of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, notably the 1974, 1979, 1987 and 1999 vintages. The last two, while not initially regarded as notable vintages, showed remarkable finesse with aging.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: times, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Clos du Val\u2019s ostensible purpose in inviting the press to this event was to launch their latest promotional effort, which they have dubbed <strong><em>Vindependence<\/em><\/strong>. As appreciative as I am of their wines and of their generous hospitality, I cannot help but revert to my advertising past and critique the ineptitude of this campaign. As my fellow Dartmouth alum and Italian Long Island refugee Michael Corleone ruefully notes in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s <strong><em>Godfather III<\/em><\/strong>, \u201cevery time I try to get out, they pull me back in.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">It isn\u2019t so much the jejune satire of their <span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vindependence.com\/sign-the-declaration\">Declaration of Vindependence<\/a><\/span>, nor the logical and thematic inconsistencies of muddling French and American traditions, nor the obvious irony that Clos du Val\u2019s\u00a0<strong>1972 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> was one of the wines that helped upend the French hegemony over the California wine industry in the storied <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judgment_of_Paris_%28wine%29\" target=\"_blank\">1976 Judgment of Paris Tasting<\/a> <em> (note the revisited rankings from 1986)<\/em>, that dilutes, rather than promotes, their brand perception. Rather, it is the deployment of such an aberrant neologism\u2014not the inadvertent malapropism of George Bush\u2019s \u201cmisunderestimated\u201d or Sarah Palin\u2019s \u201crefudiated\u201d but the echoes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsw.com\" target=\"_blank\">DSW<\/a>\u2019s <em><strong>Sandalicious!<\/strong><\/em> or the utterly wretched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olivegarden.com\" target=\"_blank\">Olive Garden<\/a>\u2019s <em><strong>Freshissimo<\/strong><\/em> that make this contrivance so off-putting.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; \">Believe me,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: georgia; \"><strong style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><span mce_style=\"color:            #006633;\" style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; color: #006633; \">Sostevinobile<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0knows a thing or two about skillfully forging a portmanteau. And, despite this critique, I have nothing but appreciation for the excellence of Clos du Val\u2019s viticulture\u2014and their hospitality.
