Nonetheless, I was willing to put my palate to the test this past Friday.<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">The good folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balzac.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Balzac Communications<\/a>  periodically find reason to include me in their wide-ranging wine tastings, regardless of my adamant exclusion of imported wines, and so I was happy to join them for the <i><b>2008 Vintage Tasting<\/b><\/i> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ugcb.net\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Union des Grand Crus de Bordeaux<\/a> (<b>UGCB<\/b>). This French-based trade organization represents \u201cthe finest <i>vignerons<\/i> of the Ch\u00e2teaux of Bordeaux, a claim that first requires a bit of explication.<br \/><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">The wines on hand this afternoon were not of the echelon <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/europe\/3673102.stm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Nicolas Sarkozy<\/a>  might break out for a state dinner with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about\/presidents\/barackobama\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Punahou Kid<\/a>. No <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Growth\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Premiers Crus<\/a><\/i>, no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moueix.com\/common\/pdf\/petrus_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Ch\u00e5teau P\u00e9trus <\/a> nor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbr.com\/producer-540-le-pin\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Le Pin<\/a>  nor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateau-cheval-blanc.com\/flash\/cheval.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Cheval Blanc<\/a>. And certainly not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yquem.fr\/yquem.php?lang=uk\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Ch\u00e2teau d\u2019Yquem<\/a>! Instead, UGCB presented around half of Bordeaux\u2019s <i>Deuxi\u00e8mes Crus <\/i>houses, along with a broad selection of Third, Fourth and Fifth Growth wines, as well as <i>(I assume) <\/i>an indeterminate number of unclassified vineyards. In baseball terms, this was more like watching the Milwaukee Brewers battle the Kansas City Royals than a marqu\u00e9e matchup between the Yankees and Red Sox.<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Secondly, I understand that 2008 seems to have been one of Bordeaux\u2019s weaker vintages <i>(while 2009 has already been crowned the vintage of the century)<\/i>. But even with these caveats, I would have expected to find an array of decent, if not impressive, wines among the 88 Ch\u00e2teaux <i>(plus ten Sauternes producers) <\/i>on hand. I came with an open mind; I left disillusioned.<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<div align=\"left\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Being a virtual neophyte in this arena, I endeavored to sample at least two wineries from each of the 12 <i>Appellations d&#8217;Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e<\/i> (<b>AOC<\/b>) represented here. Graves and its sub-appellation Pessac-L\u00e9ognan both featured a white Bordeaux<i> (Sauvignon Blanc) <\/i>and a Cabernet Sauvignon-focused red; those wines I sampled seemed passable, if not comparable to a mid-range Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Both Ch\u00e2teau Haut-Bergey and Ch\u00e2teau Larriver-Haut-Brion, a property of Premier Cru icon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haut-brion.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Ch\u00e2teau Haut-Brion<\/a>, mildly impressed with their understated reds.<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Like most Californiaphiles, I generally to prefer Cabs to Merlot, but, in Bordeaux, the bane of Miles Raymond proves the superior varietal more often than not. Saint-\u00c9milion and its neighbor, Pomerol, command astronomic prices for Merlot-dominant blends like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateau-ausone-saint-emilion.com\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Ch\u00e2teau Ausone<\/a>; appropriately, the se<br \/>\ncond tier wines I sampled from both these appellations like Ch\u00e2teau La Gaffeli\u00e8re and&nbsp;<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau La<\/font><\/font><\/font>rmande<i> (St. \u00c9milion)<\/i>, along with <font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau La<\/font><\/font><\/font> Conseillante and <font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau Gazin<i> (Pomerol), <\/i>served up highly amiable wines for the most part. Still, many of the other Ch\u00e2teaux struck me as quite lackluster.<\/font><\/font><\/font> <br \/><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Now I\u2019m as likely to be able to distinguish Listrac-M\u00e9doc from Moulis-in-M\u00e9doc from Haut-<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">M\u00e9do<\/font><\/font><\/font>c from M\u00e9doc itself as I can tell a North Ossetian dialect from South Ossetian. Nonetheless, the wines of these quaternary Left Bank stepchildren proved perfunctory, at best. Admittedly, I did like the <font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font>Greysac, but the rest seemed watery spins on Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine pumped after 60 days in barrel and diluted with just enough Tokay to retain its varietal labeling <i>(and I say that wanting to like a winery called <font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font>Chasse-Spleen)<\/i>!<br \/><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Even a neophyte who could pass Bordeaux 101 would have a reasonable appreciation for Margaux, yet despite having three<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><i> Deuxi\u00e8me<br \/>\nCru<\/i> houses on hand, these Cabernet Sauvignons proved extraordinarily tenuous.&nbsp;<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font>Dauzac and&nbsp;<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau Durfort Vivens may have been moderately impressive, but the others I sampled seemed eminently forgettable.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">At every tasting I attend, there is a coterie of regulars<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">\u2014<\/font><\/font><\/font>some poseurs, others true professionals. In the latter category, I am usually happy to exchange tasting notes with folks like Walter Vornbrock, a fellow wine veteran from the early 1980s, Susan Darwin, and Rock Wall investor Dave Roberts and his wife Barb. Among this circle, there seemed to be a consensus favoring the Saint-Julien AOC, yet I found these wines almost devoid of flavor, even the much-heralded Langoa-Barton and<br \/>\nL\u00e9oville-Barton. Equally unimpressive were the houses from Pauillac, a tongue-twister of a name that illustrates the errant orthography of the French tongue <i>(as oppose to the truer fidelity to the root Latin Italian offers)<\/i>. My notes describe&nbsp;<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">Ch\u00e2teau<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font> Langoa Barton as <font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">\u201cunderwhelming,\u201d while I pithily called<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\"> Ch\u00e2teau<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><\/font>Branaire-Ducru <font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\" style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" size=\"2\">\u201cTwelve Buck Chuck.\u201d<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font> <\/div>\n<p><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\" face=\"georgia\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! Not that these wines lack style or character\u2014they\u2019re simply too astringent to be quaffed alone. On the other hand, these Bordelaise bottlings aren\u2019t crafted to enhance the virtues of an entr\u00e9e.
