In 2009 and 2010, a noticeable decline in attendance seemed reasonable, given the sorry state of the economy. It came as a bit of a surprise that this year\u2019s event drew a relatively paltry crowd, in light of signs that things are finally on the upswing.<\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\"><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">Of course, smaller crowds means easier navigation throughout the five hours I was on hand for both the trade and the public portions of the tasting. Not enough time to cover all 108 wineries that were pouring, but certainly enough to investigate the slew of newcomers and still make the rounds with a number of old acquaintances. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambythestate.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Ambyth Estate<\/a> out of Templeton seemed a logical place to start, and while this biodynamic gem did not bring the single varietal wines it had listed, it offered an array of delectable blends, starting with their <b>2009 Priscus<\/b>, predominantly Grenache Blanc with 25% Viognier and 17% Roussanne. Their three red blends all combined Grenache, Syrah, Mourv\u00e8dre, and Counoise in varying proportions, each with one of the GMS varietals in the forefront: the <b>2008 Maiestas<\/b><i> (Syrah)<\/i>; the <b>2008 Adamo <\/b><i>(Grenache)<\/i>, and the <b>2008 ReVera <\/b><i>(Mourv\u00e8dre)<\/i>.<\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\"><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">I happen to be quite partial to Mourv\u00e8dre, a generally underappreciated grape. Others <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.sfgate.com\/2011-03-06\/food\/28655533_1_qup-syrah-and-shiraz-garnacha\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">extol the virtues <\/a>of Grenache, while, in the same breath, deriding Syrah for its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winespectator.com\/magazine\/show\/id\/43188\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">failure to seize<\/a> the public\u2019s imagination. And yet, here at Rh\u00f4ne Rangers, Forestville\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arnotroberts.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Arnot-Roberts<\/a> showcased four separate Syrah bottlings. I preferred both the <b>2009 Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard<\/b> <i>(Mendocino)<\/i> and the&nbsp;<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b>2009 Syrah North Block Hudson Vineyard<\/b> <i>(Napa)<\/i> to the&nbsp;<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b>2009 Syrah Griffin\u2019s Lair Vineyard<\/b> <i>(Sonoma Coast)<\/i>, while the generic&nbsp;<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b>2009 Syrah<\/b> <i>(North Coast)<\/i> came in on par with the single vineyard versions.<i><\/i><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\"><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">Along with Copain, which did not pour here, Arnot-Roberts and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windgapwines.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Wind Gap<\/a> have been heralded as the rule changers with their contemporary vinification of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wineandspiritsmagazine.com\/pages\/features\/0211_ComiskeySyrah.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">cool vineyard<\/a> Syrah. More striking was his Syrah-less blend, the <b>2009 Orra<\/b>, a m\u00e9lange of Grenache, Mourv\u00e8dre, and Counoise, as well as the <b>2008 Rana<\/b>, a standard GMS mix.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">I hadn\u2019t tried the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beckmenvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Beckmen<\/a> wines before, but soon found myself wondering why this Los Olivos gem has not received greater fanfare, apart from its <i><b>Sideways<\/b><\/i> highlight. Starting with their blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Marsanne, the <b>2009 Le Bec Blanc<\/b>, the winery produced a number of superlative bottlings. I enjoyed both the <b>2010 Ros\u00e9 Purisima Mountain<\/b><i><b> <\/b>(Grenache)<\/i> and the <b>2009 Cuv\u00e9e Le Bec<\/b>, a deft blend of&nbsp;45% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 14% Mourv\u00e8dre, and 7% Counoise. But Beckmen\u2019s best efforts came from its varietal bottlings, starting with the <b>2009 Estate Syrah<\/b>. The higher end<b> 2008 Syrah Purisima Mountain Vineyard<\/b> proved even more astounding, while both the <b>2009 Estate Grenache<\/b> and the <b>2008 Grenache<\/b><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b> Purisima Mountain Vineyard<\/b> <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font>matched this level. And I nearly overlooked the<b> 2008 Marsanne <\/b><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b>Purisima Mountain Vineyard<\/b>, which would have been tragic to miss. <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stolpmanvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Stolpman<\/a>, too, presented a formidable lineup, with six different Syrahs among the nine wines they poured. I am always a fan of a great Roussanne, and the <b>2008 L\u2019Avion<\/b> proved no exception. Before delving into the Syrahs, I sampled both the <b>2009 La Cuadrilla<\/b>, a Grenache\/Syrah combo, as well as the truly excellent <b>2008 Estate Grenache<\/b>. From there, the <b>2009 Estate Syrah<\/b> paved the way for profound, proprietary bottlings that included the <b>2008 Originals<\/b><i> (notably better than the 2009 also pon hand)<\/i>, the <b>2008 Hilltops Syrah<\/b>, the<b> 2008 High Density Syrah<\/b>, and Stolpman\u2019s zenith, the <b>2009 Angeli<\/b>.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">The folks from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skylarkwine.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Skylark<\/a> showcased a similar range with their wines. The <b>2008 Red Belly<\/b> married Syrah with Carignane, though previous vintages had included Grenache as well. Rebounding from 2008\u2019s misgivings, their <b>2009 Grenache<\/b> was clearly a wondrous wine, but, like Stolpman, their heart lies with their range of single vineyard Syrahs. Here, I liked the <b>2007 Syrah Unti Vineyards<\/b>, but favored both the <b>2007 Syrah Stagecoach Vineyard<\/b> and the delectable <b>2008 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard<\/b>. Making a pure Syrah play this afternoon, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hensonwines.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Henson<\/a> scored a trifecta with a superb <b>2007 Syrah Michaud Vineyard<\/b> from the Chalone AVA, the <b>2007 Syrah Luna Matta Vineyard<\/b> from Paso Robles and their home-based <b>2008 Syrah Estero Vineyard<\/b> from San Luis Obispo.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">It\u2019s been long known that some, if not most, of the exciting developments in Rh\u00f4ne varietals have come out of Paso Robles; validating that truism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaleidoswine.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Kaleidos<\/a> offered a modestly-named <b>2008 White<\/b>, a symmetrically balanced confluence of&nbsp;Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc. I relished their excellent&nbsp;<b>2006 Grenache<\/b>, as well as the equally delightful <\nb>2006 Syrah<\/b>. There appears to be an incongruity in calling a Rh\u00f4ne blend a Spanish name, yet the unspecified makeup of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jkwinecompany.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Katin<\/a>\u2019s <b>2008 La Ramblas Blancas<\/b> provided an extraordinary bottling. No such ambiguity marked the other wines I sampled, especially the crisp <b>2009 Viognier<\/b> and the <b>2009 Grenache Blanc<\/b> <i>(which they fortunately did not call Garnacha Blanca)<\/i>. I was deeply impressed by the<b> 2009 Syrah GlenRose Vineyard<\/b>, as well as by their yet-to-be-released <b>2007 Red Blend<\/b>, a Syrah remarkably dominated by its 10% Viognier component.<br \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\"><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">Given my aforementioned predilection for Mourv\u00e8dre, I found myself drawn to the <b>2007 Mourv\u00e8dre Enz Vineyard<\/b> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volkwines.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Kenneth Volk<\/a> was pouring, as well as its equally-appealing 2008 vintage. And from the realm of \u201cif you think <font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>Sostevinobile<\/b><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font> is hard to pronounce,\u201d Paso Robles\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minassianyoung.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Minassian-Young<\/a> proffered an compelling <b>2009 Mourv\u00e8dre<\/b> alongside its dry-farmed <b>2010 Grenache Ros\u00e9<\/b>. Buellton\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.curtiswinery.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Curtis Winery<\/a> showcased its own complex <b>2007 Mourv\u00e8dre Santa Ynez Valley<\/b>, complemented by a <b>2007 Heritage Cuv\u00e9e<\/b>, a m\u00e9lange of 36% Mourv\u00e8dre, 28% Grenache, 19% Cinsault, and 17% Syrah that bespoke their versatility with Rh\u00f4ne varietals. Of course, I appreciated their <b>2009 Roussanne<\/b> and the splendid <b>2007 Grenache<\/b>, while admittedly felt somewhat surprised they only poured their <b>2007 Syrah Ambassador\u2019s Vineyard<\/b> from the quartet of vineyard-designate Syrahs that they feature. <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">My last Mourv\u00e8dre fix came from Oregon\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folincellars.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Folin Cellars<\/a>, a Rogue Valley winery I had sampled in previous years. Their <b>2009 Estate Mourv\u00e8dre<\/b> exceeded the <b>2009 Estate Grenache<\/b>, but their classic GSM blend, the <b>2008 Estate Misceo<\/b>, edged out both. Another Oregonian, <a href=\"http:\/\/cliffcreek.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Cliff Creek Cellars<\/a>, started off with a smooth <b>2009 Marsanne Roussanne<\/b>, their first white effort. I had no preference between the <b>2006 Estate Syrah<\/b> and its predecessor, but did favor the <b>2005 Claret<\/b>, a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Merlot hidden beneath the table, as well as the appealing <b>2008 Tribute<\/b>, Cliff Creek\u2019s inaugural dessert wine that garnered Best of Show accolades at the <a href=\"http:\/\/worldofwinefestival.com\/news\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">2010 World of Wine Festival<\/a> in Rogue Valley. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dobbesfamilyestate.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Dobbes Family Estate<\/a> also proved a striking discovery, a winery strongly focused on Pinot Noir but showing tremendous strength with their <b>2007 Fortmiller Vineyard Syrah<\/b> and the wondrous <b>2007 Sundown Vineyard Syrah<\/b>, both from Rogue Valley.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">A final Oregon entry, Jacksonville\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.quadynorth.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Quady North<\/a> returned to <i><b>Rh\u00f4ne Rangers <\/b><\/i>with an impressive lineup that included the <b>2009 Viognier Ox Block Mae\u2019s Vineyard<\/b>, a Syrah\/Grenache-based <b>2010 Ros\u00e9<\/b>, plus a pair of Syrahs, the <b>2007 <\/b><\/font><\/font><\/font><b><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">Syrah<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/b><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b> 4 2-a<\/b> and the exceptional <b>2007 Syrah Steelhead Run Vineyard<\/b>.&nbsp;<\/font><\/font><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">Washington\u2019s lone represe<\/font><\/font><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">n<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">tative here, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterbrook.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Waterbrook<\/a>, comported themselves ably with both their <b>2008 Grenache 1st &amp; Main<\/b> and the <b>2007 Reserve Syrah<\/b>.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">This year also saw the first participants from Virginia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarara.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Tarara Winery<\/a>. Even though the cross-country haul means that this winery cannot fit within <font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>Sostevinobile<\/b><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font>\u2019s sustainable guidelines, I was happy to sample these wines, knowing little about the region other than, <font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">of course, the public saga of Kluge Vineyards and<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font> <a href=\"http:\/\/hortonwine.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Horton Vineyards<\/a>, which specializes in Petit Manseng and&nbsp;Rkatsiteli, in addition to its widely-acclaimed V<br \/>\niognier. Tarara brought three distinct bottlings of this varietal: the <b>2009 Viognier Nevaeh Vineyard<\/b>, the&nbsp;<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b>2009 Viognier Honah Lee Vineyard<\/b>, and a slightly premature&nbsp;<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><b>2010 Viognier Williams Gap Vineyard<\/b>. Both of their 2008 and 2010 Syrahs were barrel samples, as was the non-specific<b> 2010 Red Blend<\/b>. Here the <b>2009 Apparition<\/b>, a pure Viognier, ruled the day, while their Grenache Blanc, the <b>2009 Oracle <\/b>seemed pleasant enough. On the other had, both the <b>2008 Dreamer <\/b><i>(Petite Sirah)<\/i> and <b>2007 Reckless Moment <\/b><i>(Syrah)<\/i> struck me as particularly strong expressions of their respective varietals. I had recently visited Pine Ridge, so tasting through their sister winery <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chamisalvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Chamisal<\/a>\u2019s offerings mirrored this pleasure. I was equally impressed by their <b>2010 Ros\u00e9<\/b> <i>(of Grenache) <\/i>and the <b>2008 Estate Grenache<\/b>, but found their strong suits to be the <b>2008 Estate Syrah<\/b> and especially the <b>2008 Califa Syrah<\/b>.<br \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">Just as wine neophytes and aficionados alike tend to focus on the Napa for Cabernet Sauvignon, in the past decade, Paso Robles has become ground zero for Rh\u00f4ne varietals. Nonetheless, numerous other AVAs offer strong selections of these varietals, like Carneros, from where the omnipresent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truchardvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Truchard Vineyards<\/a> produced an easily assimilable <b>2009 Roussanne<\/b> and their <b>2008 Syrah<\/b>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigbasinvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Big Basin<\/a> from the Santa Cruz Mountains featured six different Syrahs, underscored by their <b>2007 Coastview Vineyard Syrah<\/b>. As truly awesome as their <b>2008 Mandala Syrah<\/b> may have been, the soon-to-be- released <b>2007 Frenchie\u2019s Ranch Syrah<\/b> proved an absolute revelation, perhaps the best Syrah of the afternoon.<br \/><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">Santa Rosa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosaobra.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Cosa Obra<\/a>, a small, artisanal winery with but two selections, nonetheless impressed with their <b>2008 Proprietor\u2019s Blend<\/b>, a fusion of Grenache and Syrah from three separate vineyards <i>(their other wine, the <b>2008 Sauvignon Blanc <\/b>showed itself to be a delightful find, despite not being a Rh\u00f4ne varietal).<\/i><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">I wonder how many people at <b><i>Rh\u00f4ne Rangers <\/i><\/b>have ever been to Oregon House, northeast of Sacramento? Somehow, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clossaron.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Clos Saron<\/a>\u2019s Gideon Beinstock makes it down to San Francisco for almost every relevant tasting to trumpet his natural wines, which span the gamut in terms of flavor. Here he demonstrated his versatility with his <b>2008 Holy Moly!<\/b>, a GMS blend focused on Syrah, and a striking <b>2010 Out of the Blue<\/b>, a Cinsault rounded out with Syrah. Closer to home, Berkeley\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockwrenwines.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Rock Wren<\/a>, Dennis DeDomenico\u2019s successor to his family\u2019s Ghirardelli Chocolates, made a noteworthy debut with their <b>2007 Syrah<\/b> from his vineyard in Solano County\u2019s Green Valley AVA.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">South of Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo winery <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sextantwines.com\/10knots\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">10 Knots Cellars<\/a> sailed in with a spectacular Viognier, the <b>2008 Beachcomber<\/b>; almost as impressive were their <b>2010 Grenache Ros\u00e9<\/b> and the <b>2006 Atlantis<\/b>, a well-balanced GMS blend. Even further south, Los Olivos\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saarloosandsons.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Saarloos and Sons<\/a> poured their parental vintages, the <b>2009 Mother <\/b><i>(Grenache Blanc)<\/i> and the <b>2008 Father<\/b><i> (Syrah)<\/i>, bypassing their <b>2008 Wolfhounden<\/b>,<b> <\/b>a Petit Verdot that pays homage to the German Shepherd\/Canadian timber wolf bred by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saarlooswolfhond\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Leendert Saarloos<\/a>.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">I wrapped up my time at <i><b>Rh\u00f4ne Rangers<\/b><\/i> with a cluster of Paso wineries, starting with the melodically-focused <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vinesonthemarycrest.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Vines on<br \/>\nthe Marycrest<\/a>. The <b>2009 Summertime<\/b>, a ros\u00e9 blended from Grenache, Syrah, Mourv\u00e8dre, and Zinfandel. The <b>2007 \u2019Round Midnight<\/b> focused on Syrah, with 20% each of Mourv\u00e8dre and Grenache. The misnamed <b>2007 Heart of Glass<\/b><i> (shouldn\u2019t a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WGU_4-5RaxU\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Blondie<\/a> song title be reserved for a white blend?)<\/i> nonetheless artfully combined 60% Grenache with equal parts Syrah and Mourv\u00e8dre. I found the <b>2007 Petite Sirah<\/b> adequate but did like the <b>2007 My Generation<\/b>, an Old Vine Zinfandel<b> <\/b>with&nbsp;<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">Syrah, Mourv\u00e8dre, and<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font> Petite Sirah mixed in.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cypherwinery.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Cypher Winery<\/a> named their Syrah the <b>2008 Phoenix<\/b>. Like Vines on the Marycrest, they added Zinfandel to their GMS, the <b>2008 Anarchy<\/b>, but omitted the Grenache. Their other GMS blend, the <b>2008 Peasant<\/b>, stayed purely Rh\u00f4ne, adding Counoise and Tannat.&nbsp;<\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ortmanwines.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Ortman Family<\/a> was not nearly as clever with their nomenclature, labeling their striking GMS+PS red blend the <b>2007 Cuv\u00e9e Eddy<\/b>; moreover, their <b>2008 Petite Sirah Wittstrom Vineyard <\/b>proved outstanding. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arroyorobles.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Arroyo Robles<\/a> served up a nice trio of wines: the <b>2008 Viognier<\/b>, their <b>2007 Ros\u00e9<\/b> <i>(a blush Syrah)<\/i>, and a dominant <b>2008 Syrah.<\/b><\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">My final stop turned out to be a revisit with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kukkulawine.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">kukkula<\/a>, a winery that pays homage to its Scandinavian heritage by giving most of their wines Finnish names. The <b>2009 vaalea<\/b> combined Roussanne with Viognier. Three consecutive vintage of their GMS concluded with the <b>2009 sisu<\/b>, an extraordinary m\u00e9lange. New to their repertoire was the <b>pas de deux<\/b>, a marriage of Syrah and Grenache from different vintages and an excellent conclusion to the afternoon.<\/font><\/div>\n<p><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">Despite five hours on the floor and notably smaller crowds, I certainly could have covered many more wineries here, although each of the rest has been reviewed one time or more by&nbsp;<font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#006633\"><b style=\"outline-style: none;\">Sostevinobile<\/b><\/font>. The relative paucity of attendees actually worried me, and I hope this will not deter <i><b>Rh\u00f4ne Rangers<\/b><\/i> from conducting this event in the future. Tastings like this have been critical to my development of our wine program, allowing me to interface with far more wineries than I might be able to cover if I had to review each onsite<i> (not that I don\u2019t try to visit as many as I can)<\/i>.
