Though these two departed titans obviously no longer manage this venture, Rothschild\u2019s daughter, the Baroness<font class=\"st\"> Philippine, has striven to ensure that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.opusonewinery.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Opus One<\/a> not be enveloped by the corporate ownership that acquired Mondavi in 2004. The result? This vintage of the first true cult wine remains as near-flawless as ever.<\/font><br \/><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>43<\/b><\/font>) A quick Internet survey shows bottles of the <b>2007 Harlan Estate<\/b> selling for $895 or better. Can a wine really be worth such an exorbitant price? Given the perfect scores it received not only from Robert Parker\u2019s Wine Advocate but also the secret Sostevinobile talley sheet I never let anyone view, this flagship bottling from Meadowood\u2019s Bill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harlanestate.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Harlan<\/a> could very well be.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>42<\/b><\/font>) Joining Opus One and Harlan in this august circle was the <b>2008 Collina Dalla Valle<\/b> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallavallevineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Dalla Valle Vineyards<\/a>. A breathtakingly beautiful wine, it was juxtaposed against a library sample of the<b> 1994 Maya<\/b>, Dalla Valle\u2019s acclaimed Cabernet Franc\/Cabernet Sauvignon blend that proved stunningly equal, 17 years after bottling, to its younger cousin.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>41<\/b><\/font>) T<br \/>\nhere is a sense of prestige and accomplishment in owning a Porsche\u2014unless you happen to own a Lamborghini first. Similarly, the next tier of wines poured at this tasting could have easily headline nearly any other event. A metaphoric Turbo S Cabriolet, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futowines.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Futo Wines<\/a> offered an astounding find, pouring their<b> 2008 Futo Estate<\/b>, a multilayered Cabernet Sauvignon blend underpinned by Cabernet Franc.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>40<\/b><\/font>) Another 530 Hp wine, the <b>2003 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tierraroja.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Tierra Rioja<\/a> unveiled from its library, presaged an auspicious evolution for the yet-unreleased 2008 vintage they also featured here. I would also note that the winery\u2019s name, meaning \u201cred earth\u201d could not be more befitting the velvety crimson hue of this wine.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>39<\/b><\/font>) I can\u2019t keep pace with the various permutations with \u201cOakville\u201d incorporated in<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"> the name<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font> of estates that produce wine in this AVA, the most specific being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oakvilleeast.net\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Oakville East Exposure<\/a>. Their exquisite <b>2008 Core Stone<\/b> presented a balanced, textured blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>38<\/b><\/font>) <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">I tend to believe that the length of one\u2019s name denotes to an inherent depth or quality. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vinecliff.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Vine Cliff Winery<\/a> would probably be concordant with this notion, especially as it pertains to their delightful <b>2007 Private Stock 16 Rows Cabernet Sauvignon<\/b>, a label that could not be more precise, unless they identified each individual bud.<br \/><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>37<\/b><\/font>) <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">An interesting winery I had not encountered previously, <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.spotowines.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Spoto<\/a>, brought out a decidedly mixed selection of Bordeaux style wines, leaving me with a profound preference for its <b>2007 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon<\/b> over the other selections in the vertical tasting they poured, as well as over their Meritage blend, the <b>2008 Cuve\u00e9 Arianna.<\/b><br \/><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>36<\/b><\/font>) <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">Next to Spoto, the renowned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.screamingeagle.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Screaming Eagle<\/a> allotted fractional sips of their Cabernet, the<b> 2008 Screaming Eagle<\/b>. Make no mistake, this still is a profound wine, but at a minimum of $1500\/bottle, I expected not simply to be floored but blown across the room. <i>Allora<\/i>, this is what inevitably happens when dedicated founders sell their winery\u2014the Jeannie is out of the bottle.<br \/><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>35<\/b><\/font>) <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">Admittedly, I <i>(as do most folks)<\/i> can sometimes be swayed by attachments or predilections; it has been well documented throughout the years I have been penning the&nbsp;<font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>Sostevinobile<\/b><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font> blog that, in the 1980s, I often made the trek to the real estate offices of Phillips &amp; Harris, Land Broker spurred by an infatuation I never found the temerity to verbalize. Similarly, I concede to having a pronounced affinity for wineries that resonate with my background or feature other commonalities. <br \/><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-si\nze: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b><\/b><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\">I nonetheless am not averse to criticizing places that my predisposition might lend to me<br \/>\nfavoring, nor have I been daunted from praising the efforts of wineries even if it might raise contention about my objectivity. Case in point, my effusive praise of late for<\/font><\/font><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Georgia\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gargiulovineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Gargiulo<\/a> holds no correlation to our shared ties to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotchkiss.org\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Hotchkiss<\/a> but highlights the strides they have made with the <b>Aprile<\/b>, its Oakville Sangiovese. Here, they even surpassed that effort with their <b>2008 OVX Cabernet Sauvignon<\/b>, the fourth bottling of this special estate wine.<br \/><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\"><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><font color=\"006633\"><b>34<\/b><\/font>) Had I discovered the website for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopesvineyard.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Hoopes<\/a> before I had sampled their wine, I am certain I would have found myself just as biased toward their Cabs. In a realm where compelling readers to scroll through a page for content is generally <i>verboten<\/i>, Hoopes\u2019 home page features a 750 ml bottle of their <b>2007 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/b> amplified to 333\u2153%\u2014a 40&#8243; image! The wine itself drinks like a bottling that could easily command similar inflation to $200, despite its relative diminutive $60 retail price.
