II) <\/span>as the first non-Italian Pope since 1523. As it remains with his successor, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Cardinal Ratzinger<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">(Benedictus PP. From <span style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avignon_Papacy\" target=\"_blank\">1309 to 1377<\/a><\/span>, the papacy was relocated to the French city of Avignon, in no small part because of Pope Clement V\u2019s desire to be near the source of his most favored wines. Clement planted vineyards just north of Avignon, near the banks of the Rh\u00f4ne, which were assumed by his successor, Pope John XXII, who also built the famed castle which gives this commune and <span style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Appellation_d%sq243%Origine_Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e\" target=\"_blank\">AOC<\/a><\/span> its name: <span style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chateauneuf.com\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape<\/a><\/span>.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Many of the Rh\u00f4ne varietals have found considerable success throughout the West Coast\u2019s AVAs, including <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Syrah<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Mourv\u00e8dre<\/span> (Mataro) and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grenache<\/span>, the principal grapes designated for Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape. Many wineries here make their own homage to this very approachable Rh\u00f4ne blend, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.bonnydoonvineyard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bonny Doon<\/a>\u2019s impresario Randall Grahm and his satiric <a href=\"http:\/\/thewinecellar.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/winecology-bonny-doon-le-cigare-volant.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Le Cigare Volant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">(note my generous attribution here, even if Boony Doon\u2019s former label, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Big House<\/span>, plagiarized my unlaunched <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ch\u00e2teau Lompoc<\/span>\u2014the Wine Served Behind the\u00a0<span style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bop.gov\/locations\/institutions\/lof\/index.jsp\">Finest Bars in America<\/a><\/span>)<\/span>. Another of my perennial favorites has been the <span style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kuninwines.com\/shop\/product_info.php?cPath=22&amp;products_id=31&amp;osCsid=869c4588d24bba3e1989c6822d2e8dc1\">Kunin <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Pape Star<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a blend that is delightfully skewed towards Grenache.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; text-align: left; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Finally, I manage to open a bottle of 2006 <span style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelgracewine.com\">Michael Grace<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">GMS<\/span> last night to accompany a quick-broiled salmon fillet I served for dinner. GMS is a blend from grapes grown at <span style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laetitiawine.com\/\">Laetitia<\/a><\/span>\u2019s Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, balanced between 60% Grenache, 10% Mourv\u00e8dre and 30% Syrah. An approachable wine to be sure, quite drinkable alone or as a companion to the aforementioned salmon.
