I may not be Dorothy Parker, but I do think some of my more piquant observations will stand the test of time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Not too long, I opined that \u201cnatural wine is to the 2020s what granola was to the 1970s.\u201d Given the half-century that spans my analogy, Millennials may dismiss this pronouncement as being out-of-touch, but I still hold it to be valid. When I previously attended a natural wine event in Richmond, I was quite stunned to find a swath of grass between the two tents littered with dozens of cigarette butts! So much for all the health and environmental benefits of natural winemaking that the 20somethings tout\u2014this copious tobacco consumption and flagrant littering underscores the fact that their contentions are but a fad with blind allegiance for most of these adherents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Do not get me wrong. I am not being dismissive of natural wine; many of its tenets completely align with what <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span> looks <span style=\"color: #006633;\">to<\/span> promulgate. But, by the same token, I refuse to be dogmatic about any individual school of \u0153nology, as long as they adhere to responsible stewardship of the land and the environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Obviously, if we are going to serve any wine, the primary criterion is that it had better taste good! With no apology, here is where I do break with those who maintain that the mouse\u2014or funkiness\u2014that permeates so many of the natural wines is a mark of character. No, it is flawed, if not undrinkable, and should be eschewed, not espoused. But rather than reduce this to a generational argument, let me counter this pabulum of non-intervention with examples of superb natural wines from true craftsmen I encountered at the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/vaievem.wine\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wine from Here<\/span><\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.subjecttochangewine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Subject to Change<\/span><\/a> in Point Richmond. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Harvesting its German from the acclaimed Mokelumne Glen Vineyard in Lodi, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vaievem.wine\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vai e Vem<\/span><\/a> excelled with its <strong>2021 Psychosphere<\/strong>, an impressive rendition of Kerner, the vineyard\u2019s main white varietal. Even more esoteric\u2014at least at this stage\u2014 Matt Niess\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/northamericanpress.wine\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">North American Press<\/span><\/a> showcased its <strong>2021 The Rebel Sonoma Coast<\/strong>, a wine derived from Baco Noir, the hybridized cross of <a title=\"Learn more about Folle Blanche wine grape variety\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wine-searcher.com\/grape-168-folle-blanche\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Folle Blanche<\/span><\/a> with an unknown member of North America\u2019s native <em>Vitis riparia<\/em> family. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">It\u2019s hard for me to offer an objective assay of <a href=\"https:\/\/clossaron.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Clos Saron<\/span><\/a>\u2019s wines, given my long-standing friendship with winemaker Gideon Beinstock, whom many consider the <em>de facto<\/em> high priest natural wine; his wines can range from the unapproachable to the sublime, in which latter case, the <strong>2018 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard<\/strong> richly attests. Nearby, Gideon\u2019s prot\u00e9g\u00e9s and Oregon House neighbors at <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Frenchtown Farms<\/span> displayed their own virtuosity with an excellent<strong> 2021 Cotillion<\/strong>, a deft blend of Syrah, S\u00e9millon, Zinfandel, and Carignane. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Meantime, Los Angles-based visual artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ashkahnofficial\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ashkahn<\/span><\/a> Shahparnia\u2019s eponymous label showcased its subtle <strong>2022 Clairette Blanche<\/strong>, a Rh\u00f4ne varietal that is finding increased popularity in California, especially along the Central Coast. Also boasting distinctive varietals from the Central Coast, <a href=\"https:\/\/phelanfarm.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Phelan Farm<\/span><\/a>\u2019s inestimable Rajat Parr featured a <strong>2022 Chardonnay Ros\u00e9<\/strong>, a red-skinned mutation of the varietal rarely seen in California. Rajat also presented two esoteric blends, the <strong>2022 Savignin &amp; Chardonnay<\/strong> and the extraordinary <strong>2021 Misturado<\/strong>, a Mencia rounded out with 25% Trousseau <em>(aka Bastardo).<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1498 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Natural-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Natural-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Natural-1024x617.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Natural-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Natural-1536x926.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Natural-2048x1235.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Natural-624x376.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Not all the wineries on hand in Richmond were neophytes. Time-tested pros like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laclarinefarm.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">La Clarine Farm<\/span><\/a> proved their mettle with a delightful <strong>2023 Vermentino <\/strong>and their <strong>2020 Mourv\u00e8dre<\/strong>. Likewise, Healdsburg transplant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruthlewandowskiwines.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ruth Lewandowski<\/span><\/a> featured a <strong>2022 Stock Pot Gr\u00fcner Veltliner<\/strong> and the noteworthy <strong>2020 L Stone Sangiovese<\/strong>, while Megan Bell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marginswine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Margins<\/span><\/a> impressed with a wonderful <strong>2022 Paicines Verdejo<\/strong>. It is always a treat when a winery like Santa Cruz\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.florezwines.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Flor\u00e8z<\/span><\/a> produces a <strong>2021 Cabernet Pfeffer<\/strong>, while Sonoma\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cotedescailloux.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">C\u00f4te des Cailloux<\/span><\/a> impressed with their <strong>2021 Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Similarly, the <strong>2022 Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong> starred at<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lesluneswine.com\">Les Lunes<\/a><\/span> and Subject to Change\u2019s Populis label, with the event host adding a jammy <strong>2021 Old-Vine Zinfandel Mendocino<\/strong>. And along with its Sauvignon Blanc, the <strong>2021 Thirst Trap<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stagiairewine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Stagiaire<\/span><\/a> added its <strong>2021 Epiphanies in Place<\/strong>, a Santa Crux Mountasin Pinot Noir and the <strong>2021 Consistency in Chaos,<\/strong> a mouth-watering Syrah from Sonoma. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Of course, there were numerous trendy wines and hybrids on hand, including the ubiquitous piquets and ludicrous cider &amp; fruit-blended wines. Then again, my generation had Boone\u2019s Farm and Ripple, not to mention the viticultural equivalent of Pineapple Pizza, wine coolers. But, over time, we learned to put aside the pseudoscientific veneer of granola for the flavors and environmental benefits of organic produce, while stomping out pernicious tobacco from mainstream acceptance; and with this maturity came our appreciation of the centuries-old refinement of varietal selections.
