Not in the sense that I could suddenly pinpoint a perfect 40-yard spiral pass nor did I feel I had become the foremost celebrity, apart from my <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.maxwellanderson.com\/Bio.htm\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">auto-iconic former college roommate<\/span><\/a>, of Indianapolis, that pseudocosmopolitan enclave primarily known for hosting of amateur athletic championships. Rather, much as Colts QB must have felt seeing his younger brother Eli succeed him as Superbowl champion, I beamed with fraternal pride as I navigated a series of wine tastings from select vineyards in Washington and Oregon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: small;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">Much corollary can be found in the dynamic of the early rivalry that matures into a genuine enthusiasm for the parallel success of one\u2019s siblings. Being the eldest, or <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">primus inter pares<\/span> as those of us who maintain a strict credence in primogeniture are wont to describe ourselves, usually means being the first to achieve success outside the confines of the familial setting. At first, there is an almost natural tendency to denigrate the efforts or abilities of those who follow us hierarchally, the self-validating belief that \u201che or she will never be as accomplished as I am.\u201d Over time, however, the solidification of one\u2019s credentials and position gives way to a more benevolent desire to one\u2019s consanguineous rivals achieve a measure of parity in their own right.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: small;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">I freely acknowledge that early on in my wine pursuits, I scoffed at the notion of wines from California\u2019s brethren West Coast states. I remember being approached by an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,946225,00.html?iid=chix-sphere\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">AMREX<\/span><\/a> colleague back in 1983 about presenting an Oregon property to the rum producers I was endeavoring to help expand their portfolio. \u201cOregon has enormous potential,\u201d he proposed, but I was not to be persuaded.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: small;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">Some twenty-five odd years later, it is not a revelation but an avid concession to declare that our Northern neighbors are producing wines on par with, if not infrequently exceeding, the vintages produced here. Notable Oregon wineries like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.domaineserene.com\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Domaine Serene<\/span><\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adelsheim.com\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Adelsheim<\/span><\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.argylewinery.com\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Argyle<\/span><\/a> excel throughout the entire range of Pinots: Chardonnay, Blanc, Gris and Noir, as well as the sparkling wines based on these varietals. Washington has established its primary reputation in Syrah and Merlot, but has garnered impressive accolades for the Cabernet Sauvignon produced by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.quilcedacreek.com\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Quilceda Creek<\/span><\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.leonetticellar.com\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Leonetti<\/span><\/a> and others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: small;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">Renowned winemakers like Randall Grahm, Piero Antinori and Jed Steele have all ventured beyond their California footholds into the Pacific Northwest. The wines I sampled over lunch Thursday underscored their confirmation of the quality these viticulture regions can produce. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.northstarmerlot.com\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Northstar<\/span><\/a> is an affiliate of Washington\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.Ste-Michelle.com\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Ch\u00e2teau Ste. Michelle<\/span><\/a> devoted exclusively to Merlot; their 2005 offering shows that this varietal can actually be made into a wine.* The signature <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">2007 Eroica Riesling<\/span>, a collaboration with the esteemed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drloosen.com\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Ernst Loosen<\/span><\/a> may not parallel the heights of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FFltqVS8d9I\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No. 3<\/span><\/a>, but will certainly open the eyes of any Chardonnay devotee.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: small;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">Later that afternoon, I happened upon a more heterogeneous sampling of Oregon vintages, amid an array of Nike footwear and the offer of a complimentary eyebrow waxing I judiciously declined. The <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">2007 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.toriimorwinery.com\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Torii Mor <\/span><\/a>Pinot Gris<\/span> may sound at first like a New Zealand import but was readily identifiable as a noteworthy Willamette Valley expression of this versatile grape. Similarly, the <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">2006 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.willakenzie.com\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Willakenzie<\/span><\/a> Pinot Noir Willamette Valley<\/span> did much to fortify the reputation of this AVA. The wine, though, that came closest on Thursday to earning a much-coveted <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/3\/7\/4\/7\/5\/167304-157473\/4Star.jpg\" \/>&nbsp;was the <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">2005 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foriswine.com\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Foris<\/span><\/a> Cabernet Franc Siskiyou Terrace<\/span>, a Rogue Valley production of this underappreciated varietal. I was more than happy to accept a second <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-size: small;\">(and a third) <\/span>sampling.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: small;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">I did manage to finish the evening with tastings of a number of California wines. Though past the point of taking meticulous notes, I found the mayoral&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plumpjackwinery.com\/plumpjackwinery\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Plump Jack<\/span><\/a> Cabernet and both <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ByronWines.com\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Byron<\/span><\/a> Pinot Noirs eminently agreeable. More of a revelation to me was the setting, a hitherto unknown cultural gem that now occupies the former Museum of Modern Art space in above the Green Room in San Francisco\u2019s Veterans Building. granted, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfpalm.org\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Museum of Performance &amp; Design<\/span><\/a> may not rank in significance with San Francisco\u2019s major repositories or even the above-referenced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imamuseum.org\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Indianapolis Museum of Art<\/span><\/a>, but as long as they refuse to acknowledge that cacophonous abomination known as Beach Blanket Babylon, <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">Your West Coast Oenophile<\/span> will happily grant them plaudits.<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\"><br style=\"outline-style: none;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; outline-style: none; font-size: x-small;\">*As opposed to the sub-$10 swill that so inflamed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YS9ocP6FNvM\">Miles Raymond<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your West Coast Oenophile felt a bit like Peyton Manning Thursday.
