I was originally introduced to their Chaucer\u2019s line of Olallieberry and Raspberry wines, as well as the only domestic Mead of which I am aware. Some years later, on my first visit to their winery, I learned that they produced an intriguing range of Italian varietals<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-size: 13px;\"> (including their aforementioned <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: 13px;\">2002 La Vita<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-size: 13px;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">, along with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and other familiar grapes. Even though my quest for their excellent Dolcetto proved futile this time, I still returned back to San Francisco with a bottle of their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 13px;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 13px;\">004 Santa Cruz Mountains Nebbiolo<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"> to share on our Saturday night excursion<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; font-family: georgia;\">.<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">The Ginkgo Girl and I joined fellow&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><a style=\"outline-style: none;\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hotchkiss.org\">boarding school&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">survivor Jon Welles and his wife for&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><a style=\"outline-style: none;\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/flavorpill.com\/sanfrancisco\/events\/2009\/3\/6\/the-nose\">The International Theater Ensemble\u2019s<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">&nbsp;multimedia adaptation of&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><a style=\"outline-style: none;\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gogol\">Nikolai Gogol<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">\u041d\u043e\u0441<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\">(The Nose)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">&nbsp;at San Francisco\u2019s Phoenix Theatre. The Nebbiolo proved a worthy complement to Paulette\u2019s pre-performance hors d\u2019\u0153uvres\u2014just what we needed to hold us over until we ventured out to dinner at the new&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px;\"><a style=\"outline-style: none;\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heavensdog.com\/\">Heaven\u2019s Dog<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; margin: 0px; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">I\u2019m told there is something propitious about the name, and it certainly has no bearing on the cuisine. \u00dcber-successful restaurateur <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slanteddoor.com\/phan_story.html\">Charles Phan<\/a> has deviated here from his native Vietnamese cuisine, but proves himself equally adept at what he describes as Chinese comfort food. Moreover, there is a common dedication to sustainable design and cuisine not only between this restaurant and&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #006549;\">Sostevinobile<\/span>, but with star mixologist <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2009\/02\/22\/FD0G15TQOS.DTL&amp;hw=thad+Vogler&amp;sn=001&amp;sc=1000\">Thad Vogler<\/a>\u2019s upcoming Bar Agricole and with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bardessono.com\">Bardessono\u2019s<\/a> Phil Sherburne, who sourced much of the recycle materials built into the decor. The evening\u2019s singular revelation came, however, from <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Your West Coast Oenophile<\/span>\u2019s adroit choice of a wine to accompany the eight or so menu selections that adorned our table. The <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Scholium Project Verdelho Naucratis Last Slough Vineyard<\/span> is a wine boasts far more than a protracted name. Though principally a Portuguese varietal, winemaker <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thepour.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/09\/09\/winemaking-on-the-edge\/?scp=2&amp;sq=Abe%20Schoener&amp;st=cse\">Abe Schoener<\/a> has crafted his expression, from Scholium\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/wine.appellationamerica.com\/wine-region\/Suisun-Valley.html\">Suisun Valley<\/a> vineyards, more as a \u201cstraight Gr\u00fcner Veltliner knock-off.\u201d Let him call it what he will, it made for superb pairing.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding: 3px; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; margin: 0px; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">I look forward to savoring more of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scholiumwines.com\">Scholium Project<\/a><\/span>\u2019s wildly-experimental&nbsp;\u0153nology in the not-too-distant future.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The artistry of the grape I didn\u2019t mean to pay Bargetto short shrift in my last posting.
