Apparently, I have been compensating for this miscalculation ever since, so much so that I\u2019m known in my Italian circles as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: small;\">Marco Sempre Tardi<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. A compliment, to be sure.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In a previous incarnation,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">Your West Coast Oenophile<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&nbsp;was involved with a pulchritudinous, albeit nefarious, woman who hailed from the Beijing region and managed to achieve the hitherto incomprehensible feat of systematically arriving even later than I did. Much to her delight, I nicknamed her <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: small;\">Tardissima<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Beyond that, pleasant recollections of said perfidious&nbsp;<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/%7Eplomio\/clytemnestra.html\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Clytemnestra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> remain few and distant. \u201cTime wounds all heels,\u201d John Lennon wryly noted,&nbsp;and,&nbsp;without waiting for the inevitable repercussions to expiate her calumny, I have moved onto genuine domestic bliss. Because my beloved Ginkgo Girl and her circle of friends have all adopted English alternatives for their proper names, I, in turn, have recently decided to endow myself with a Chinese name: Tai Da (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: times;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small;\">\u592a\u5927<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: georgia;\">).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small; font-family: georgia;\">As per usual, my penchant for digression does have its purpose; in this instance, veering from overt promulgation of the artifacts and milestones of my own ethnicity, I am striving to demonstrate a catholic appreciation for the significant contributions other cultures have made. In the viticultural realm, my pronounced fondness for Italian varietals grown throughout the West Coast belies the delight I take in the diversity of other wines produced here, especially for the incredible spectrum of grapes affiliated with the Rh\u00f4ne region.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I have been attending the annual Rh\u00f4ne Rangers convention in Fort Mason for many years before I officially represented&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: small; color: #006549;\">Sostevinobile<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&nbsp;at this year\u2019s gathering. This year, I even managed to arrive <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">well before <\/span>the gates were opened to the public<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-size: small;\"> (though sufficiently late for the trade portion to keep my reputation unblemished)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. With 123 wineries pouring, I had to be judicious in selecting the ones which I could sample.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Sadly, that meant having to bypass many familiar stations, like <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ridge<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bonny Doon<\/span>, the always-wonderful <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lava Cap<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Arrowood<\/span>, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rosenblum<\/span>, among others, in favor of wineries to which I had not previously been exposed. So, after paying courtesy calls to numerous new-found friends from Paso Robles (<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">L\u2019Aventure<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Halter Ranch<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Tablas Creek<\/span>, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justin<\/span>), not to mention <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Anaba<\/span>, the dean of Sonoma\u2019s Eighth Street, I quickly found myself at the table for <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.casswines.com\">Cass Winery<\/a><\/span>, a clandestine outpost on the east side of Paso Robles what bears no connection to my former squash opponent and noted wine critic, Bruce Cass. With six wines featured, their standout was the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Grenache<\/span>-until partner Lisa Plemons brought out their <strong>2006 Mourv\u00e8dre<\/strong>, the first&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/3\/7\/4\/7\/5\/167304-157473\/4Star.jpg\" \/>&nbsp;I will bestow.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Zigzagging over to the lower reaches of the alphabet, I next treated myself to Healdsburg\u2019s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.starkwine.com\">Stark Wine<\/a><\/span>, a feint misnomer. With a well-balanced <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Viognier<\/span>&nbsp;and a quintet of Syrahs on display, this winery excelled with both the 2005 and 2006 vintages of its bipartite <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Syrah, Teldeschi and Unti Vineyards<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Next up, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.NaggiarVineyards.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Naggiar Vineyards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span>from Grass Valley apparently makes every varietal known to mankind, but brought along only a handful of their Rh\u00f4ne selections. Much like Cass, the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Grenache<\/span> and the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Mourv\u00e8dre<\/span>&nbsp;proved the most memorable.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">I visited with Washington\u2019s titan, Ch\u00e2teau Ste. Michelle, whose various subsidiaries were spread throughout the hall, for a chance to lose my Cinsault virginity before I ambled onward to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.FrickWinery.com\">Frick Winery<\/a><\/span>, a serendipitous discovery out of Geyserville. Their <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Cinsault, Dry Creek Valley<\/span> might well have deserved a&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/3\/7\/4\/7\/5\/167304-157473\/4Star.jpg\" \/>, were it not only&nbsp;my second exposure to a wine from this varietal; unquestionably, their <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Viognier, Gannon Valley<\/span> merits this accolade. In addition, their fraternal twins, the&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Grenache, Dry Creek Valley<\/span> and the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Grenache Blanc, Owl Hill Vineyard<\/span> win significant kudos.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">While we\u2019re on the subject of first times, I was also introduced to my first wines from Idaho, courtesy of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.SawtoothWinery.com\">Sawtooth Winery<\/a><\/span>. Their <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Viognier, Snake River Valley <\/span>displayed distinct undertones of right wing militia<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> (I jest)<\/span>\u2014actually, it was quite amiable for a wine in its price range, even though it falls beyond&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #006549;\">Sostevinobile<\/span>\u2019s sustainable boundaries. On the other hand, Paso Robles\u2019 <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.JadaVineyard.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Jada Vineyard<\/span><\/a><\/span>&nbsp;seems mired in East Coast nostalgia, or so one might infer from labels like <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Red Blend, \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen\u201d<\/span> and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Syrah, \u201cJersey Girl<\/span>.\u201d&nbsp;Just as long as they don\u2019t try to pair their wines with meats from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satriale%sq243%s_Pork_Store\">Satriale\u2019s<\/a>, I guess they\u2019ll do fine.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">I swung by <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prestonvineyards.com\">Preston of Dry Creek <\/a><\/span>to sample their <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Cinsault<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">(my third experience!)<\/span>&nbsp;before tasting four wines from <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jemrosevineyards.com\/\">Jemrose Vineyards<\/a><\/span>, a relatively new venture out of Bennett Valley. Both the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Viognier Egret Pond<\/span> and the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Gloria\u2019s Gem<\/span>, a Syrah blend, were highly impressive, but it took the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Grenache Foggy Knoll<\/span> to win a&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/3\/7\/4\/7\/5\/167304-157473\/4Star.jpg\" \/>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Even with my iPhone\u2019s GPS functionality, &nbsp;I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ll ever be &nbsp;able to find Oregon House, CA. Still, every couple of months, the good folks at <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rwv.com\/\">Renaissance Winery and Vineyard<\/a><\/span> e-mail an invitation to visit. Naturally, I can never bypass their table at Rh\u00f4ne Rangers or at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.familywinemakers.org\/tastings\/tastings.cfm\">Family Winemakers<\/a>. As I expected, my effort was well rewarded with a wonderful <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2006 Viognier<\/span> and a&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/3\/7\/4\/7\/5\/167304-157473\/4Star.jpg\" \/>-worthy <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2004 Mediterranean Red<\/span>, a GMS blend.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Meantime, the state of Oregon was well-represented by none other than <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.domaineserene.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Domaine Serene<\/span><\/a>, the much-honored Pinot Noir house. Their <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Viognier Rockblock Del Rio <\/span>and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2005 Syrah Rockblock, Seven Hills <\/span>did nothing to diminish their considerable reputation.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Down in Santa Maria, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Sans Liege <\/span>could well see their esteem catapult with their 2006 Grenache, my final&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" style=\"outline-style: none;\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/3\/7\/4\/7\/5\/167304-157473\/4Star.jpg\" \/>&nbsp;of the tasting. And San Francisco\u2019s own <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.skylarkwine.com\">Skylark Wine Company<\/a><\/span>\u2019s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007&nbsp;Syrah&nbsp;Rodger\u2019s Creek<\/span> might easily top the 91 points <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Wine Spectator<\/span> awarded its 2006 version.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">One of the few independent Washington wineries on hand, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.DeLilleCellars.com\">DeLille Cellars<\/a><\/span>, merited further attention for its Doyenne line, especially the 2006 Syrah, Doyenne Signature. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahsvineyards.com\/\">Sarah\u2019s Vineyard<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;ably demonstrated that not everything that comes from Santa Clara County need feel <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">(or taste)<\/span> fabricated. My final stop of the day, Napa\u2019s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.Hagafen.com\">Hagafen Cellars<\/a><\/span>, left me smiling with both their <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2005 Syrah, Prix Vineyards Reserve<\/span>, and the favorite <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Roussanne <\/span>that I managed to taste at&nbsp;the event.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\">Unfortunately, there were several wineries I did not have the chance to taste, like the quirky <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.FourVines.com\">Four Vines Winery<\/a><\/span> from Templeton, either because they ran out of supplies, or because they packed up prematurely. Despite my delight in the many wines I did taste, I have to say that this year\u2019s Rh\u00f4ne Rangers&nbsp;Grand Tasting was a bit of a letdown. Many established favorites, like <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Eno<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Broc Cellars <\/span>and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">A Donkey and Goat<\/span>\u2014not to mention <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Alban<\/span> and myriad others I am overlooking\u2014chose simply not to participate. Half of the festival participants seemed to be food vendors or peripheral manufacturers. More disconcerting was the paucity of attendees during the public portion of the event. The mere trickle of a crowd, rather than the customary deluge that hits once the doors open, seems to indicate that the Punahou Kid has a long way to go before his<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\"> l\u00e9ger de main<\/span> can right this economy.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Quo vadis, public\u0113? <span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal;\">Surely, it cannot be that<\/span><\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">shudder!<\/span>\u2014the public has lost its interest in drinking good wine <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">(along with the corollary conclusion that <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bronco_Wine_Company\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fred Franzia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> has won)!<\/span> Whatever the cause of this dire phenomenon, note here that&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; outline-style: none; font-size: small; color: #006549;\">Sostevinobile<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: small;\">&nbsp;is poise to ensure that the pleasures of \u0153nophilia will be back, stronger than ever!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: #ffffff; background-image: none ! important; word-wrap: break-word; outline-style: none; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small; font-family: georgia;\">***Astute devotees of this blog will note that I had promised to post my Rh\u00f4ne Rangers comments three days ago.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am one of those people who is chronically late.*** The last time I arrived early for anything was the day of my birth, which arrived nearly a month before my parents had anticipated.
