And so it was with the same exultation as when one, at last, moves onto a more quaffable bottling that <strong>Your West Coast Oenophile<\/strong> finally reengaged <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span> with the wine realm at the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/chardonnayclassic.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2021 Chardonnay Classic<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1346\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Chardonnay-Classic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Chardonnay-Classic.jpg 699w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Chardonnay-Classic-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Chardonnay-Classic-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/>This three-day conference at Napa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meritagecollection.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Meritage Resort<\/span><\/a>, home to <a href=\"https:\/\/trinitascellars.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Trinitas Cellars<\/span><\/a> and tasting room collective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meritagecollection.com\/vista-collina\/dining\/tasting-rooms\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vista Collina<\/span><\/a>, included an afternoon Grand Tasting to which the trade was invited. The wine being poured, however, played an almost ancillary role to the liberating atmosphere of the event. Outdoors! Self-serve charcuterie and hors d\u2019\u0153uvres! No masks! No social distancing! Physical contact with other human beings!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Not that the 14 wineries that shared their current releases by any means slackards. Juxtaposed against the warm afternoon sunshine and the wafts of fresh spring blooms, these Chardonnays were redolent of the lush characteristics that can make this varietal the perfect complement to an outdoor meal or a delicate seafood entr\u00e9e. Standout included the <strong>2016 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pelletestate.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pellet Estate<\/span><\/a> Chardonnay Sunchase Vineyard<\/strong><em> (with its distinctive heraldic label)<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artesawinery.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Artesa<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Estate Vineyard <strong>2018 Selection 92 Chardonnay<\/strong>, an ever-reliable <strong>2018 Signature Chardonnay<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darioush.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Darioush<\/span><\/a>, and Oregon contribution to the event, the <strong>2017 Elsie\u2019s Chardonnay<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stollerfamilyestate.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Stoller<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">I would be remiss in not citing the <strong>2015 Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> that host Trinitas Cellars added to the mix. An exceptional wine that belied its modest <em>(for Napa)<\/em> $60 price tag. And with his <strong>2019 C\u00e9pages d\u2019Or<\/strong>, a deft blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Picpoul Blanc and Viognier from his <a href=\"https:\/\/terminimwines.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Terminim<\/span><\/a> joint venture, as well as the <strong>2018 La Rivi\u00e8re Chardonnay<\/strong> from his new <a href=\"https:\/\/maritanavineyards.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Maritana<\/span><\/a> label, Donald Patz showed he has not missed a beat from his Patz &amp; Hall tenure. But perhaps the most surprising revelation of the afternoon came from renowned Judgment of Paris winner <a href=\"https:\/\/montelena.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ch\u00e2teau Montelena<\/span><\/a>, their <strong>2010 Chardonnay.<\/strong> Poured from its magnum bottle, this wine put to rest any notion that a Chard cannot be cellared and aged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">As a wone professional, I am eager yet daunted to confront the new realities of the post-pandemic wine realm. Having trade tastings revived is not only good news but gives hope that I will be able to resuscitate my visions for <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span>. But if the price tag Chardonnay Classic sought for its conference is harbinger for the industry, my optimism may prove unfounded. Public tickets for an industry tasting, like <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zinfandel.org\">ZAP<\/a><\/span> or <a href=\"https:\/\/familywinemakers.org\"><span style=\"color: #006633;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Family Winemakers<\/span><\/span><\/a> geneally have run in the $75-95 range. And those events typically feature over 120 wineries. Tickets for this Grand Tasting were $250!! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Granted, Chardonnay Classic is an incipient venture, and higher prices abound everywhere in the wake of the 15-month economic setback we all have endured. Still<em>\u2014and I speak as someone who produces major tastings\u2014<\/em>I would expect such a premium price to feature not only an enormous selection of Chardonnay wineries but a strong presence of its premier producers. Where was Kistler? Where was Peter Michael? Aubert? Arista? Kongsgaard? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Alas, if pricing like this is the new norm, I fear the rebound for the wine industry will be long in the making\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If years could be encapsulated as a wine, 2020 would unarguably be a bottle of Hearty Burgundy (now six months beyond its expiration date).
