Because this gathering showcased the convergence of wine and technology, I could have thought up a highly inventive way to signal her, like\u00a0<span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/dotsub.com\/api\/smallplayer.php?filmid=3066&amp;filminstance=3068&amp;language=none\" target=\"_blank\">Tweeting<\/a><\/span>\u00a0&#8220;tell Bambi I&#8217;m standing by the\u00a0<span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chwine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cameron Hughes<\/a><\/span>\u00a0table&#8221; from my iPhone or by logging onto the Web app\u00a0<span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nirvino.com\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \">Nirvino<\/a><\/span>\u00a0had set up for the event and wryly posting &#8220;2007\u00a0<span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inmanfamilywines.com\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \">Inman Family<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Russian River Valley Pinot Gris would sure taste great if Bambi were tasting it here with me&#8221; on their overhead screen. Naturally, I first found myself at the table for Classic Malts of Scotland, where the temptation of Lagavulin 16 Year Old proved\u2026too tempting.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">Admittedly, it takes a few moments to cleanse one\u2019s palate from the taste of\u00a0Single Islay Malt Scotch, so let me take this time to explain what the intersection of wine and technology is <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">not<\/span>. At the bottom of the list, one would have to cite the automatonic wonder known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winepod.net\/winepod\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The Winepod\u2122<\/a>. This impersonal contraption has been billed as \u201cGeorge Jetson, Meet Winemaker\u201d and could only come from the aesthetic void known as San Jose\u2014throw in the grapes, flip on the switch and await your technologically perfect wine. Suitable, of course, to be dispensed in discrete 1 oz. shots at the nadir of the wine tasting experience, the late and not especially lamented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2007\/12\/14\/WIUNTSF5C.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">VinoVenue<\/a>. Technology, however, does offer the possibility of enveloping more people into the richness of the wine experience, and, as it has become the <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; \">lingua franca<\/span> of the under-35 set, there is much to be said for the virtues of marrying social networking and web-based communities to the sheer joy of \u0153nophilia.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">So onward to the wines I discovered (given the utter randomness of listings in the program guide, the order of my selections will likely seem splenetic). First up, though not because he invited me to the upcoming\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinotdays.com\" target=\"_blank\">Pinot Days Grand Festival<\/a>\u00a0Steve Rigisch poured a pair of truly excellent 2007 Russian River Pinot Noirs, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olsonogdenwines.com\/olsonogden\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Olson Ogden<\/a>\u00a0and his own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ketchamestate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ketcham Estate<\/a>. If this was a prelude to the June gathering, I am bound to be euphoric.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">Post-prandial fare came early Thursday evening, with a 2004 Port of Pinot Noir, which <a href=\"http:\/\/122westwinery.com\" target=\"_blank\">122\u00b0 West Winery<\/a> calls<span style=\"font-weight: bold; \"> Sonoma County Dessert Wine<\/span>. Their <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2006 Napa Valley Sangiovese<\/span> was equally impressive. Strains of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GNA-jRm-nvQ\" target=\"_blank\">The Deuces\u2019 WPLJ<\/a> <span style=\"font-style: italic; \">(not the Long Island radio station)<\/span> echoed through my head with my taste of Rick Kasmier\u2019s\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">White Port <\/span>of Chardonnay, a wine that may well become timely in the midst of this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highbeam.com\/doc\/1P2-1213252.html\" target=\"_blank\">economic neo-depression<\/a>. In a similar vein, I admit I cringed before tasting his\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-family: times; font-size: 16px; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kazwinery.com\/\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: small; \">Kaz Vineyards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><span style=\"font-size: small; \">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; \"><span style=\"font-size: small; \"> <\/span>2008 Stimulus<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic; \">(seems <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; \">every<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; \"> advertiser these days feels compelled to use this term in their promotions)<\/span>, but with a lineup that includes<\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; \"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; font-family: georgia; \">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; font-family: georgia; \">Lenoir, Malbec, Barbera\u00a0and DeChaunac, I suspect a trip to his Kenwood tasting room will soon be in order.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">In stark contrast to Kaz\u2019 27 varietal offerings, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bedarravineyards.com\/bedarrawines.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bedarra Vineyards<\/a> from Dry Creek Valley produces a mere 250 cases of a single wine. Their second vintage, a <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2007 Chardonnay<\/span>, showed tremendous promise. Meanwhile, making their first California foray, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yrousseauwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Y Rousseau Wines<\/a>\u00a0presented their understated yet refreshing <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2008 Russian River Valley Colombard Old Vines<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">Similar modesty was not to be found in Walla Walla\u2019s lone representative, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winesofsubstance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wines of Substance<\/a>. While their labels cheekily borrows from <span style=\"font-style: italic; \"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amctv.com\/originals\/breakingbad\" target=\"_blank\">Breaking Bad<\/a><\/span>\u2019s<\/span> twist on the Periodic Table, their wines are anything but chemical in composition or taste, with both <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2007 Riesling<\/span> and their <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2007 Merlot<\/span> ably displaying why Washington excels in these particular varietals.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">Loyal readers of this blog well know my partiality for the Italian interpretation of most cultural expressions or phenomena. Naturally, I gravitated to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donodalcielo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dono dal Cielo<\/a>\u2019s table, where I was delighted with both the 2006 and 2007 versions of their Newcastle (the California hamlet, not Newcastle-on-Tyne, the more renowned\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastlebrown.com\" target=\"_blank\">British brewery <\/a>enclave) Zinfandel. Of greater fidelity, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duevigne.com\" target=\"_blank\">Due Vigne di Famiglia<\/a> offer a quartet of wines, punctuated by their salubrious <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2006 Nebbiolo<\/span> and my predilection a <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2005 Dolcetto<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">It would have been wonderful if Michael Giarraputo had been able to speak with me in Italian, but his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinktankwine.com\" target=\"_blank\">Think Tank Wine Company<\/a> is quiet conversant in the sustainable values\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #006347; \">Sostevinobile<\/span>\u00a0espouses. His <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2007 La Encantada Vineyard Pinot Noir<\/span> is an excellent organic expression of Santa Rita Hills\u2019 signature varietal. Another winery aiming at a different kind of appeal, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtesanwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Courtesan Wines<\/a>, echoed the highly romanticized version of this Venetian archetype, so sensually portrayed in <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/video\/screenplay\/vi2829058329\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dangerous Beauty<\/a><\/span>. Hints of sensuality were abundant in both the<span style=\"font-weight: bold; \"> 2006 Courtesan<\/span> (Cabernet Sauvignon) and <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2006 Brigitte<\/span> (Merlot), both hailing from Oakville. The big <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">O<\/span> of the evening, however, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.obrienestate.com\" target=\"_blank\">O\u2019Brien Estate<\/a>, whose <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2006 Seduction<\/span> is a Bordeaux-style blend that lived up to the promise of its name. Their <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2007 Chardonnay<\/span> was also a worthy counterpart.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">A Palo Alto venture, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drinkcannonball.com\" target=\"_blank\">Cannonball Wine Company<\/a>, inspired me to whip out my iPhone 3G and play the immortal saxophonist\u2019s <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pRrFWp4DUho\" target=\"_blank\">Mercy, Mercy, Mercy<\/a><\/span>. Their 2006 Cannonball Cabernet was a deft blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from a decidedly unkosher m\u00e9lange of four vineyards in Dry Creek, Mendocino and Paso Robles. A more traditional blend was the <span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">2005 Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon<\/span> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster-estate.com\" target=\"_blank\">Lancaster Estate<\/a>, a stellar Bordeaux-style assemblage of\u00a090% Cabernet Sauvignon,\u00a05% Malbec,\u00a02% Merlot,\u00a02%\u00a0Cabernet Franc, and\u00a01% Petit Verdot.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">It\u2019s a rare treat when a wine looks as good as it tastes. The labels <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erickentwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Kent Cellars<\/a> commissions for their wines are vibrant, evocative and well-suited to their portfolio of Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir from Sonoma. Most memorable of the evening was their<span style=\"font-weight: bold; \"> 2006 Dry Stack Vineyard Syrah<\/span>, a stellar Bennett Valley vintage with and equally memorable label from artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erickentwines.com\/pages\/art.jsp?catid=186\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Day<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">Some people are drawn to wines by their rating points from Robert Parker or <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; \">Wine Spectator<\/span>. I tend to succumb to those wineries that can offer something contrarian in nature, as demonstrated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcellars.com\" target=\"_blank\">Delgadillo Cellars<\/a>, which was just now releasing its <span style=\"color: #cb2425; font-weight: bold; \">2001<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; \">Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon<\/span>! A splendid Old Vine Cabernet, this wine came closest to warranting the highly coveted <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/3\/7\/4\/7\/5\/167304-157473\/4Star.jpg\" width=\"92\" \/>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; word-wrap: break-word; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \">I topped off the evening with a return to the Classic Malts of Scotland table and, later, an unanticipated <span style=\"font-style: italic; \">(and soon to be contested)<\/span>\u00a0rendezvous with the traffic constabulary from the SFPD. Though highly improbable, I can categorically state that a late-night encounter with the elusive Ms. Francisco would have been far preferable.
