Sometimes <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Your West Coast Oenophile<\/font> can get a tad overzealous when starting a new blog entry. But, with the possible exception of grappa, wine is, according to my unabashed claim, notably superior to the vast array of alcoholic potables because it is a communal beverage. Whisky, ale, gin\u2014these drinks are designed for individual consumption. Wine is meant to be shared, with friends or with strangers, in happiness or in sorrow, with all partaking from the same bottle. It is this unique, convivial quality of wine wherein lies its distinctive beauty.<\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"font-size: 12px; outline-style: none;\" face=\"Arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\" size=\"2\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Georgia\" size=\"2\">The month of June began as all months should, with a celebratory kickoff. I received an invite from a loose collective of women heralding from assorted Napa wine ventures to join them for lunch and wine tasting at San Francisco\u2019s Ferry Building\u2014in other words, a marvelous excuse to break up the tedium of a Monday, to crisscross the City on my <font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trekbikes.com\" target=\"_blank\">14-speed Trek<\/a><\/font>, and to meet new friends<font style=\"font-style: italic;\"> (I still haven&#8217;t figured out how I was included in their mailing)<\/font> who share similar passions.<\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Georgia\" size=\"2\">Being a long-time fan of <font><a href=\"http:\/\/taylorsautomaticrefresher.com\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor\u2019s Automatic Refreshers<\/a><\/font> in St. Helena, any chance to patronize their outpost here has \u201cGott\u201d to be good. And it didn\u2019t hurt to be accompanied by a sextet of female denizens of the viticultural arts. After all, it wasn\u2019t all that long ago when it seemed the only woman in the wine industry was&nbsp;<font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambertbridge.com\/aboutus\/winemaker.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Jill Davis<\/a><\/font>!<\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"font-size: 12px; outline-style: none;\" face=\"Arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Georgia\" size=\"2\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"Times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Georgia\" size=\"2\">My hostesses each brought a sampling of their own wines, ranging from <font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.orinswift.com\" target=\"_blank\">Orin Swift<\/a><\/font>\u2019s ever-popular <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 The Prisoner<\/font> to the somewhat dyslexically-labeled <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2008 Abi Blanc<\/font> <font style=\"font-style: italic;\">(a 100% Viognier)<\/font> and <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Adi Ros\u00e9<\/font> <font style=\"font-style: italic;\">(of Syrah)<\/font> from Beth Adams\u2019 new&nbsp;<font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abigailadamswines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Abigail Adams<\/a><\/font>. From stalwart <font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patzhall.com\" target=\"_blank\">Patz &amp; Hall<\/a><\/font>, Anne Moses brought two of her finer Pinot Noirs, the <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir<\/font> and the <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2007 Jenkins Ranch<\/font>.<\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Georgia\" size=\"2\">Another familiar label, <font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.viader.com\" target=\"_blank\">Viader<\/a><\/font>, was ably represented daughter Janet, who organized this gathering. Her Howell Mountain offerings consisted of their eponymous <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2005 Viader<\/font>, a proprietary Bordeaux and their elegant Cabernet Franc, the <font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2005 Dare<\/font>. From <font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buehlervineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\">Buehler Vineyards<\/a><\/font>, gregarious Italophile Misha Chelini graced the table with their&nbsp;<font color=\"#454545\"><font style=\"font-size: small;\"><font style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2008 Russian River Chardonnay&nbsp;<\/font><font style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><font style=\"font-weight: normal;\" color=\"#000000\">and<\/font>&nbsp;2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon<font style=\"font-weight: normal;\" color=\"#000000\">. Quaintly named <font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jellyjarwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Jelly Jar Wines<\/a><\/font>, a venture of Shannon Pistoni and her husband, proved to be no misnomer\u2014their <\/font><font color=\"#000000\">2007 Old Vine Zinfandel<\/font><font style=\"font-weight: normal;\" color=\"#000000\"> was jammy indeed and quite pleasing to the palate. Finishing off the event, fellow pentasyllabic Italian surnamed Melissa Leonardini also chipped in with her <\/font><font color=\"#000000\">Orin Swift 2006 Papillon<\/font><font style=\"font-weight: normal;\" color=\"#000000\">, a traditional Bordeaux blend and the <\/font><font color=\"#000000\">2007 Volunteer<\/font><font style=\"font-weight: normal;\" color=\"#000000\">, a side venture of her and her husband.<font style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif; outline-style: none;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Georgia\" size=\"2\"><font color=\"#454545\"><font style=\"font-size: small;\"><font style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><font style=\"font-weight: normal;\" color=\"#000000\"><font style=\"font-size: small;\">Amid such pleasant company and delightful wines, it would have been a shame to swill and spit, and so I allowed myself to forgo the illusion of further productivity for the afternoon and happily imbibe. Oh well, as the crew packed up their effects to head back to Napa, I gladly accepted the proffering of a nearly-full bottle of the Volunteer&nbsp;<font style=\"font-style: italic; outline-style: none;\">(I might have taken more, but where to carry on a road bike?)<\/font>. I managed to cradle the leftover portions we had ordered and passed them out to some transients sleeping on the grass beside the immortal Vaillancourt Fountain.
