{"id":1161,"date":"2019-06-21T15:47:38","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T22:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/?p=1161"},"modified":"2019-06-21T17:56:09","modified_gmt":"2019-06-22T00:56:09","slug":"eschew-obfuscation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/?p=1161","title":{"rendered":"Eschew obfuscation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">I probably don\u2019t write about sustainability enough in this column, but <strong>Your West Coast Oenophile<\/strong> has designed <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span> to incorporate sustainable principles and practices in every aspect of our business model, including the production of <em><strong>all<\/strong><\/em> the West Coast wines that will be part of our program. After all, I did coin the name from a portmanteau of <strong>sostenere<\/strong> <em>(to sustain)<\/em> + <strong>vino<\/strong> &amp; <strong>nobile<\/strong>. So I was initially quite pleased to read the installment <em><strong>Rise of ethical consumerism causing an increase in awareness of the alternative wine category<\/strong><\/em> in yesterday\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">WineBusiness.com<\/span>, having been admonished by numerous potential investors that such considerations, while admirable, would have no bearing on the potential success of my business model.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Previously, I had not been familiar with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wineintelligence.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wine Intelligence<\/span><\/a>, the British-based analysts whose report entitled <em><strong>Global SOLA<\/strong><\/em> formed the basis of this article<em>. <\/em>So far, so good, until I discovered that this acronym stood for <em>Sustainable, Organic &amp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Lower Alcohol <\/span><\/em>wine. At the risk of apostasy, how does that equate? What are the environmental benefits of lower alcohol wine? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">I am not against producing more moderate wines\u2014in a quest for improved flavor or greater pairing with food. This is a stylistic or \u00e6sthetic consideration on the winemaker\u2019s part. Outside of that, however, the impetus toward lower alcohol wine is a thinly-veiled banner for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/thomaspellechia\/2019\/06\/10\/a-ten-year-plan-to-reduce-global-alcohol-consumption-is-showing-results\/#558d7282742c\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">neo-Prohibitionists<\/span><\/a> who are eroding the marketplace for wine worldwide. As it becomes more apparent that recent studies alleging that there are no benefits to alcohol consumption are <a href=\"http:\/\/wineindustryinsight.com\/?p=100690\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">skewed, if not outright biased<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wine-searcher.com\/m\/2019\/03\/the-danger-of-biased-drinking-studies\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">,<\/span><\/a> it behooves these denizens to align themselves with ethical advocacies and movements that are popular with the mainstream, like environmentalism and climate control. But this affiliation is wholly misplaced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1165\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Cigar-Zin.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Cigar-Zin.png 366w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Cigar-Zin-104x300.png 104w, https:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Cigar-Zin-354x1024.png 354w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">On a parallel note, I have long advocated the separation of alcohol from the regulatory authority governing the other so-called \u201csin taxes.\u201d The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF), now known as TTB, is an anomaly. No one can rationally argue that there are health benefits that mitigate the dangers of smoking, and even an organization as nefarious as the NRA would not try to portray as salubrious. Wine, with its resveratrol, is the diametric opposite of these other two \u201cvices,\u201d and should never have been lumped in the same category.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">For years, I have been lobbying against any affiliation, implied or direct, between alcohol and tobacco, particularly labels and events that seek to marry the alleged pleasures of cigar smoking to a fine port or brandy or scotch. And don\u2019t even get me started about Altria\u2019s proprietorship of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ste-michelle.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ch\u00e2teau Ste. Michelle<\/span><\/a>! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">But know this isn\u2019t some idle <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slacktivism\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">slacktivist<\/span><\/a> rant. <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span> will be utterly inflexible in its complete prohibition of tobacco. We will not employ smokers\u2014not merely because of the added health insurance burden but to ensure our customers enjoy their visit without having to endure even a hint of tobacco stench; nonetheless, we will gladly fund tobacco cessation programs should otherwise qualified personnel wish to join our team. Our projected 8,300 sq. ft. rooftop deck will be completely smoke-free, which includes banning the use of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/medical\/article\/San-Francisco-weighs-1st-US-city-ban-on-14010921.php\">insidious Juul and other vaping devices<\/a>.<\/span> Similarly, our private <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Club SVN<\/strong><\/span> lounge will neither permit any form of tobacco nor will its concierge accommodate cigar orders or similar requests from our members. This policy is, of course, primarily our own \u00e6sthetic consideration, yet, unlike SOLA, our standards seek to recognize what truly aligns with the ethics of environmentalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">The wine industry has long been recognized as being in the forefront of environmental policy and innovation, but this is not its only vanguard. Last week, I attended a wonderful tasting organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onemarket.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">One Market<\/span><\/a> Wine Director Tonya Pitts. Women in Wine was a benefit for <a href=\"https:\/\/lacocinasf.org\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">La Cocina<\/span><\/a>, a not-for-profit incubator in San Francisco for women seeking to create their own culinary startup. The event featured a roster of over 25 distinguished California wineries quarterbacked by women winemakers, and while it would be somewhat of a hyperbole to describe this lineup as a veritable Who\u2019s Who of female \u0153nologists here, it definitely compared to an NFC ProBowl lineup: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merryedwards.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Merry Edwards<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bouchaine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bouchaine<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sthelenawinery.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">St. Helena Winery<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donkeyandgoat.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Donkey and Goat<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ernestvineyards.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ernest<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trombettawines.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Trombetta<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.farniente.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Far Niente<\/span><\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickelandnickel.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nickel &amp; Nickel<\/span>,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthastoumen.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Martha Stoumen<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theopolisvineyards.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Theopolis<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zacamesa.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Zaca Mesa<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artesawinery.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Artesa<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.https:\/\/sharednoteswine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shared Note<\/span><\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/cattleyawines.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Cattleya<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conduitwine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Conduit<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tessierwinery.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Tessier<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buchervineyard.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bucher<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notrevin.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Notre Vin<\/span>\/<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alienorwines.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Alienor<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasirenawine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">La Sirena<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcbridesisters.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">McBride Sisters<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wait-Mast<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neelywine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Neely<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">C\u00f4te West<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Stonestreet<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duckhorn.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Duckhorn<\/span><\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldeneyewinery.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Golden Eye<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghostblockwine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ghost Block<\/span><\/a>, and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Mojave<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">At this time, I am refraining from my observations on the individual wines I tasted, in part because lacking a printed program compelled me to transcribe my comments on Notepad on my iPhone, a laborious process that kept me from covering everyone who participated in this event. But I will make the observation that none of these wines semed notably feminine in character\u2014or masculine, for that matter. They were simply strong, routinely excellent vintages, wines that compelled you to focus on their structure and balance and flavor, the expression of the varietal and the distinction of the terroir. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">And that is testimony to yet another facet of the wine industry that puts it in the forefront: women here have attained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northbaybusinessjournal.com\/industrynews\/wineindustry\/9711078-181\/wine-succession-planning-business?artslide=6&amp;slide=GAL\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">a level of parity<\/span><\/a> with men that makes their craft indistinguishable by gender.
