Probably the best-known example is from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jimi-hendrix.com\">Jimi Hendrix<\/a>\u2019 <b><i>Purple Haze<\/i><\/b>, with \u201c\u2019scuse me while I kiss the sky\u201d invariably being interpreted as \u201c\u2019scuse me while I kiss this guy.\u201d Not that there\u2019s anything wrong with that <i>(to quote Jerry Seinfeld)<\/i>.<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 12px;\" face=\"arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Hendrix aside, the indisputable King of the Mondegreens has to be John Fogerty of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.creedence-online.net\/\">Creedence Clearwater Revival<\/a>. Is there a person alive&nbsp;who can even come close to deciphering the words to <i><b>Down on the Corner<\/b><\/i>? Or <i><b>Up Around the Bend<\/b><\/i>? You can look up the lyrics to these songs on the Internet; it will absolutely amaze you what he\u2019s actually singing!<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 12px;\" face=\"arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Creedence could be joyous. Creedence could be political. Creedence could be incredibly poignant. Their most heart-wrenching song <i>(with surprisingly well-enunciating vocals to match)<\/i>, <b><i>Lodi<\/i><\/b>, still remains incredibly evocative every time I listen to it. For several decades, it stood as the only thing most people knew about this quiet, Sacramento Delta town.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 12px;\" face=\"arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Those of us involved in the wine business in the early 1980s had another impression of Lodi. From the days when a wine could be labeled as a varietal if it contained 51% of a specified grape, Lodi thrived as a cheap source of bulk fillers, most notably <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.practicallyedible.com\/edible.nsf\/pages\/tokaygrapes\">Tokay<\/a> <i>(no correlation to Hungary\u2019s etherial <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tokaji\"><i>Tokaj<\/i><i>i<\/i><\/a><\/i>) and, secondarily, Thompson seedless. There were a handful of wineries that were outside the incestuous, quasi-industrial<i>\u2014a frequent joke, back then, was that these facilities might be requisitioned as emergency refineries when the next oil crisis hit\u2014<\/i>troika of Gallo, Franzia and Bronco that ruled the Central Valley; these predominantly cooperative collectives, assembled from a vast swath of local growers, produced some of the most ungodly wine known to mankind. One outfit, known back then as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/findarticles.com\/p\/articles\/mi_m3488\/is_10_83\/ai_93232037\/\">Eastside Cooperative Winery<\/a>, had an inventory of 212 wines <i>(types, not necessarily varietals)<\/i> that they offered. The one I still cannot forget was Chocolate Cinnamon Wine.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 12px;\" face=\"arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Eastside\u2019s sole virtue, apart from their moderately successful <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.allexperts.com\/q\/Wine-1615\/2008\/12\/Locate-Wine-Liquor-Producer.htm\">Royal Host Brandy<\/a>, was that they made their Lodi neighbors, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alacrastore.com\/storecontent\/Thomson_M&amp;A\/Canandaigua_Wine_Co_Inc_acquires_Guild_Wineries-219610020\">Guild Wineries<\/a>, seem almost competent. Or maybe not. In those days, Guild had one brand of note, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cresta_Blanca_Winery\">Cresta Blanca<\/a>, and another, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cviwines.com\">Cribari<\/a>, that I\u2019m told had once been respectable but had been turned into a pallid version of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carlorossi.com\">Carlo Rossi<\/a>. Their crushing and fermentation took place in Fresno, then they would ship the bulk wine up Highway 99 to Lodi, where it was cellared and bottled. This convoluted process baffled <b>Your West Coast Oenophile<\/b>, to put it mildly.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">\u201cWhy are you exposing your wine to Central Valley heat in this manner?\u201d I asked with well-warranted incredulity. Their response offered little clarification. \u201cWe think people perceive Fresno as a negative. We wanted the <b>prestige<\/b> of \u2018Bottled in Lodi\u2019 on our label!\u201d Of course, people back then thought Ronald Reagan had no idea what was going on with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.angelfire.com\/ca3\/jphuck\/BOOK3Ch7.html\">Iran-Contra<\/a>, either!<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; backg\nround-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Back in the early 1980s, these aforementioned wineries and other nearby ventures had upwards of 500,000 cases of wine stacked in their warehouses<i> (I saw 50,000 cases alone of Eastside\u2019s inimitable Chocolate Cinnamon concoction)<\/i>. Then someone at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brown-forman.com\">Brown-Forman<\/a> came up with the brilliant concept of wine coolers, a blend of indescribable wine with a base of fruit juice and high fructose corn syrup. Millions of gallons of hitherto unsalable wine were dumped into these 6-packs, and an entire sector of the wine industry was rescued from impending oblivion.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">It was virtually impossible to screw up the wine cooler solution. Unless you were Guild. Brown-Forman had California Coolers, with their memorable ad campaign. Gallo, in its inimitable fashion, let Brown-Forman blaze a path, then swamped them, in typical Gallo fashion, with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qkKXl_KtpZM\">Bartles &amp; Jaymes<\/a>. Guild, on the other hand, came up with Quinn\u2019s Quail Coolers, and one of history\u2019s most misguided ad campaigns: <b>S<\/b><b>oar with the Quail<\/b>. Fine, I suppose, except for the incidental consideration that the quail merely jogs and never gets off the ground for any appreciable period of time.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 12px;\" face=\"arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">In similar fashion, I would like to think that it\u2019s virtually impossible to screw up wine grown on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/wine.appellationamerica.com\/wine-region\/Howell-Mountain-%7E-Napa-Valley.html\">Howell Mountain<\/a>. If the <b><i>Taste of Howell Mountain<\/i><\/b>, which I attend last weekend, is any indication, my premise is well-founded. With not even a remote semblance of Guild to be found among the 40 wineries donating their fare to this charitable fundraiser, there was nary a flawed wine to be found. Great if you\u2019re an inveterate imbiber; not so great if you\u2019re an aspiring blogger. How does one differentiate <i>(at least in print)<\/i> among a plethora of stellar Cabernets and Zinfandels<i> (with a smidgen of Syrah and other varietals)<\/i> grown in this landmark AVA?&nbsp;<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<p><font style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 12px;\" face=\"arial\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\">\n<div style=\"outline-style: none;\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"times\" size=\"3\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font style=\"outline-style: none;\" face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">The tasting&nbsp;felicitously&nbsp;began with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc from host <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.charleskrug.com\/\">Charles Krug<\/a>, the sole non-Howell presence at this benefit. I must concede that even I have frequently overlooked this excellent winery, which has unfairly suffered the perception of being \u201cthe other <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.robertmondaviwinery.com\">Mondavi<\/a>\u201d as well as being \u201cthe other <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.krug.com\">Krug<\/a>.\u201d Since the mid-1990s, Charles Krug has meticulously endeavored to reestablish both its wines and its branding, and now oversees what I believe is the largest holding of organically-farmed acreage in the entire county. Moreover, with the sales of Robert Mondavi and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.louismartini.com\">Louis M. Martini<\/a> to external, maleficent conglomerates, it remains the last of the independently-owned grand estate that dotted Highway 29 in&nbsp;the 1970s.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 3px; outline-style: none; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-image: none ! important; font-family: arial,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"georgia,verdana,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><font xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Outside on the lawn, tables were spread out generously around central islands for catering and silent auction bids to afford easy access to the assorted wineries offering a sampling of their recent vintages. Participants ranged from boutique operations like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bluehallvineyard.com\">Blue Hall<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.summitlakevineyards.com\">Summit Lake<\/a> to industry stalwarts like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cakebread.com\">Cakebread<\/a>, <u><\/u><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.duckhornvineyards.com\">Duckhorn<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beringer.com\">Beringer<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stclement.com\">St. Clement<\/a>. A trio of Roberts (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.robertcraigwine.com\">Robert Craig<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.robertfoleyvineyards.com\">Robert Foley<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.robertsandrogers.com\">Roberts + Rogers<\/a>) have also been long on the&nbsp;<font style=\"font-weight: bold;\" color=\"#106347\" face=\"georgia\">Sostevinobile<\/font>&nbsp;roster. Others, like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cornerstonecellars.com\">Cornerstone<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nealvineyards.com\">Neal Family Vineyards<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fleurywinery.com\">Fleury<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.retrocellars.com\">Dunn Vineyards<\/a> , <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blacksears.com\">Black Sears<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haberfamilyvineyards.com\">Haber<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cadewinery.com\">CADE<\/a> and another \u201cCaps Lock\u201d venture, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spencevineyards.com\">SPENCE<\/a>, provided welcome newcomers for our incipient venture. Semi-reticent <i>(in their choice of nomenclature, not \u0153nology)<\/i> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whsmithwines.com\">W.H. Smith<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wskeyes.com\">W.S. Of course, the very next day, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pizzeriadelfina.com\">Pizzeria Delfina<\/a>&nbsp;brought in a version twice this size to accommodate their booth at <b><i>Golden Glass<\/i><\/b> in San Francisco. Bidders both local and from afar had turned out to raise much-needed funding for Angwin\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hmesd.k12.ca.us\/\">Howell Mountain Elementary School<\/a>, and by the end of the day, had contributed over $32,000 to the cause. While the auction proceeded, volunteers from the school and community offered liberal pourings of sparkling wine, and, for those who still desired, full glasses of the various wines we had sampled outside. The room had a bit of a cathedral-like aura to it, but the proceedings were anything but solemn. Before returning to home to the Ginkgo Girl, I stopped off at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taylorsrefresher.com\">Taylor\u2019s Automatic Refreshers<\/a> in downtown St. Helena and kept the CHP at bay with one of their ever-delightful veggie&nbsp;burgers. For now, I\u2019m too lazy to complete my research and find out from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uncorkedevents.com\">Uncorked Events<\/a> why Howell Mountain hasn\u2019t been included in their Napa Valley with Altitude tastings. The orphaned hill among its brethren mounts? The black sheep of the Napa Clan? Perhaps, in compensation, I should compose a Howell Mountain anthem. Perhaps I might even have to sing and record it myself with my distinctive atonal delivery.
