At one point, my quest brought me to a home in Noe Valley, where the three roommates were seeking to replace the fourth, who had just moved out.<br style=\"outline-style: none; \" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">Now, to be perfectly honest, <strong>Your West Coast Oenophile<\/strong> will never make it into the <strong><em>Good Housekeeping<\/em><\/strong> Hall of Fame nor have a place featured in <strong><em>Better Homes &amp; Gardens<\/em><\/strong>, but with the possible exception of the domicile of a certain lawyer\/cab driver on Twin Peaks, this has to have been the most unsanitary household I have ever set foot in. So maybe it didn\u2019t approach the squalor one sees on <em><strong>Hoarders<\/strong><\/em>, but with three practicing potters in residence, the place seemed little more than an amalgam of clay residue and decrepit furniture.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">The really problem, however, wasn\u2019t the abysmal condition of the premises but the tenor of my prospective co-tenants. The leaseholders, a boyfriend and girlfriend, seemed genial enough, pretty much conforming to a discernable type from that era\u2014adamantly anti-nuclear, pro-Jerry Brown, heavily into alfalfa sprouts, Patchouli oil, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huangting.org\/attachment\/WindowsLiveWriter\/Wish_you_were_here.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Pink Floyd<\/a>. The other occupant exuded a far different vibe, with impossibly gnarly hair and woefully undersized lenses that kept her eye in a perpetual squint\u2014the kind of women Woody Allen tended to date while pursuing Diane Keaton in his 1970s films. <br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">Maybe I should have been clued in by the fact her name was Zenobia. After the perfunctory tour of the house and pottery equipment, the three housemates sat me down over a cup of tea and poised to evaluate me over a single question: \u201cif I moved in, would I be able to love Zenobia?\u201d<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">I paused, not to contemplate the possibility but, rather, to figure a diplomatic way to pose my response. I looked to Zenobia, drew a deep breath, then turned to her roomies. \u201cNo!\u201d I replied, as I made retreated for the door without hesitation. Nary a day has gone by since that I stopped to wonder what might have been.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">Fortunately, attending <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arlequinwinemerchant.com\/\">Arlequin Wine Merchant<\/a>\u2019s California Natural Wine Tasting for the 2nd Annual San Francisco Natural Wine Week required no similar declaration of unwavering fidelity. As inveterate <span style=\"font-family: georgia; font-size: 10pt; color: #006633; \"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span> readers know, while I have an appreciation for this approach to winemaking, I am, by no means, one of their rabid zealots. After all, if it weren\u2019t for manipulation, few, if any, contemporary varietals would exist today<em> (I know <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wine-maker.net\">Sean Thackrey<\/a>  attempts to replicate winemaking from ancient Greek texts, but would he want to resurrect 5th Century B.C. Macedonian grapes?)<\/em>.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">That said, there is much to commend in the minimal intervention that Natural Winemaking extols; the results, when good, can be very, very good. Elsewise, let\u2019s just say it\u2019s an acquired taste. The twelve wineries on hand at this event certainly covered the gamut. <\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">I started off at the entrance where Chris Brockway\u2019s own label, Broc Cellars, as well as his joint venture, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.broadsidewines.com\">Broadside<\/a>, had set up. I suspect Arlequin and its sister operations, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.absinthe.com\">Absinthe Brasserie<\/a>, may account for 50% of the 4600 cases of the <strong>2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Margarita Vineyard<\/strong> Broadside produces\u2014no surprise, as this wine has consistently shown excellently every year it has been produced. I have also been long enamored of Broc\u2019s Grenache, but they opted this time to pour the stellar <strong>2009 Carignan Alexander Valley <\/strong>instead. I was not as impressed with their <strong>2008 Pinot Noir Tondr\u0113 Grapefield<\/strong>,but my introduction to their 2009 Vine star, a blend of Picpoul, Chardonnay, and Roussanne, proved to be quite revelatory.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">I cited <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.littorai.com\">Littorai<\/a>\u2019s <strong>2007 The Haven Pinot Noir<\/strong> in my last entry, so gladly moved up a notch to their <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Mays Canyon<\/strong>. Their versatility Chardonnay kept pace with its Burgundian confr\u00e8re, as evidenced by the <strong>2008 Chardonnay Charles Heintz<\/strong>, also from the Sonoma Coast.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">The <strong>2007 Petit Fr\u00e8re<\/strong> from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.untivineyards.com\">Unti<\/a>  seemed a serviceable GMS blend, while I found their <strong>2007 Estate Zinfandel<\/strong> quite distinctive. Personal predilections aside, I have always felt this winery makes its strongest statements with its Italian varietals, like the <strong>2008 Estate Barbera<\/strong> they poured here. Underscoring my contention, the <em>2008 Estate Sangiovese<\/em> proved exemplary, one of the best expressions of this varietal I have sampled in recent months.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">So many wineries I know custom crush at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copainwines.com\" target=\"_blank\">Copain<\/a>, I often forget they have their own label, as well.with three wines poured on this particular evening, I found both their <strong>2009 Tous Ensemble<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \"><strong> Ros\u00e9<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">, a blush Pinot Noir, and the 2009 <strong>Tous Ensemble<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>Viognier <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">rather adequate, but relished their <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Wentzel<\/strong>. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salinia.com\">Salinia<\/a><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">, <\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">their offshoot from assistant winemaker Kevin Kelley, displayed an appealing complexity with both their <strong>2006 Chardonnay Heintz Ranch<\/strong> and the <strong>2006 Pinot Noir W. E. Bottoms<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">I wasn\u2019t entirely clear on the interrelationship between Salinia and its other tablemates, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.liocowine.com\">Lioco<\/a>  and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naturalprocessalliance.us\/home\">Natural Process Alliance<\/a>, though these latter two endeavors comprise two of the more predominant Wine on Tap labels increasingly found in San Francisco. lioco proved just as impressive as they had at last year\u2019s tasting, with a splendid <strong>2007 Pinot Noir Klindt<\/strong> from Mendocino and their trademark <strong>2007 Indica<\/strong>, a Carignane rounded out with Grenache and Mourv\u00e8dre. NPA\u2019s <strong>2009 Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley<\/strong>, one of the wines they also distribute in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kleankanteen.com\">\u201crefillable aluminum canteens\u201d<\/a>  that have been conspicuously supplanting water bottles over the past couple of years, proved itself more than a gimmick or sustainably novelty. An unlisted addition to the bill, a stellar<strong> 2007 Grenache <\/strong>came from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/gracewinecompany.com\">A Tribute to Grace<\/a>, the side venture of NPA assistant winemaker Angela Osborne. <\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">At last year\u2019s event, I befriended <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clossaron.com\">Clos Saron<\/a>  winemaker Gideon Beinstock and eventually joined him at the 30th Anniversary party for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.renaissancewinery.com\">Renaissance Winery<\/a>, his principal gig in the far reached of Oregon House, CA. While I initially found myself quite favorably disposed towards his vinification, I found myself questioning some of his wines at this year\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pinotdays.com\/Events\/Festival_Events.asp?YearID=2010&amp;LocID=SFO\">Pinot Days<\/a>. But what I had initially construed as possible cork taint repeated itself in a number of the wines he poured this day\u2014the frequent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2010\/09\/17\/FDCG1FEJRT.DTL&amp;type=wine\">downside to the Natural Wine movement<\/a>. Both the <strong>2009 Tickled Pink<\/strong>, a ros\u00e9 of Syrah, and the <strong>2005 Heart of Stone Syrah<\/strong> tasted off<em> (musky)<\/em>, while their proprietary blends, the <strong>2009 Carte Blanche<\/strong><em> (Sauvignon Blanc, Roussanne, Chardonnay, Viognier)\u00a0<\/em>and the <strong>2005 Black Pearl<\/strong> <em>(Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Roussanne) <\/em>seemed pleasant, if perfunctory.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">Meanwhile, my old friends from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adonkeyandgoat.com\">A Donkey and Goat<\/a>  also displayed some of the hazards of <\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">this new minimalism. Not that I didn\u2019t like their<strong> 2008 Blend 413<\/strong><em> (a traditional GMS with Counoise added) <\/em>nor their <strong>2007 Fenaughty Vineyard <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>Syrah <\/strong><\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">or the <strong>2007 Vielles Vignes <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>Syrah<\/strong><\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">. But Jared and Tracey have shown themselves capable of extraordinary wines, starting with their debut Syrah in 2000 that floored everyone at Family Winemakers or, more recently, their <strong>2006 Tamarindo Roussanne<\/strong>. In this context, their obeisance to the tenets of Natural Winemaking seems somewhat to have diminished their prowess.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">Most Natural winemakers acknowledge this methodology poses a gamble, and sometimes that gamble can really pay off. Somehow, over the years, I had managed to bypass <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arnotroberts.com\">Arnot-Roberts<\/a>  at a number of tastings I had attended, so this evening\u2019s gathering gave me an overdue opportunity to rectify this mistake. Starting with the <strong>2009 <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>Old Vine White<\/strong><em> <\/em><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \"><strong>Compagni Portis <\/strong><em>(Gew\u00fcrztraminer, Trousseau Gris, Riesling)<\/em>, their wines all lived up to their considerable maverick reputation. While the <strong>2008 Syrah Hudson<\/strong> clearly overshadowed the<strong> 2008 Syrah Clary Ranch<\/strong>, the <strong>2009 Trousseau Luchsinger<\/strong> from Clearlake showed itself an exceptional wine\u2014even if they declined to label it <strong><em>Bastardo<\/em><\/strong>. The treat of the evening, however, was the release of their <strong>2009 Ribolla Gialla <\/strong>from Vare Vineyard in Napa, one of four wineries bottling from this same crop. Given my long-stated desire to taste a California expression of this varietal, I was<em>\u2014quite naturally<\/em>\u2014immensely pleased.<\/span><span xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-family: georgia; font-size: 13px; \"><\/p>\n<div style=\"outline-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px; padding-left: 3px; background-image: none !important; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; \"><span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 13px; \">Natural Wine Week will return in 2011, and I am sure I will attend the pertinent events once again. Maybe I\u2019m spending too much time with angel investors and other financial types in my quest to fund <span style=\"outline-style: none; font-size: 10pt; color: #006633; \"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span>\u2014I don\u2019t think I could afford to undertake such a risky proposition as these winemakers do.
