Current conditions have made visiting wineries untenable for me\u2014I normally drop by without onerous reservations and engage the owner or winemaker for extended discussions, not formal tastings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">And so I am currently reduced to serendipitous discoveries through diurnal culinary exploits\u2014my lockdown \u201chobby\u201d\u2014from my haphazard search for undiscovered wines at San Francisco\u2019s sundry liquor purveyors. Know that long before I started <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Sostevinobile<\/strong><\/span>, I have been an impassioned champion of Mourv\u00e8dre. My first serious exposure to this varietal came from one of the sporadic offerings of Mataro from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ridgewine.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ridge<\/span><\/a>, further cementing my belief that their bottlings of various Rh\u00f4ne varietals and other deviations from their Monte Bello and their renowned Zinfandel program really constitute the hallmarks of this winery. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">Whether a wine is labelled Mourv\u00e8dre o<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">r Monastrell or Mataro, the grape is still relatively rare to find as a single varietal here in Califo<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">rnia, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">tho<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">ugh <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">there has <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1291\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-scaled.jpg 2560w, http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-300x210.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-1024x717.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-768x538.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-1536x1076.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-2048x1435.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/blog.sostevinobile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Greaser-624x437.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">been a notable recent resurgence, particularly in Paso Robles and with specialist<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\"> lik<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">e Hardy Wallace\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Dirty &amp; Rowdy<\/span>. Most people will probably recognize Mourv\u00e8dre <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">as <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">a component in GSM blends here and in Ch\u00e2teau-Neuf\u00a0 du\u00a0 Pape or C\u00f4tes du Rh\u00f4ne. But ne<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">ar<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">ly all of these wines are Syrah or Grenache focused, with Mourv\u00e8dre relegated to relative obscurity. In other words, the Holy Ghost of the GSM Trinity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">I tend to think of Mourv\u00e8dre as a wine meant to be enjoyed on its own, like Lagrein or Charbono, not primarily as a complement to food. But with more time on my hands than I often know what to do with, I find myself tinkering with even my tried &amp; true recipes. An abundance of ripe Heirloom Tomatoes at <a href=\"https:\/\/hoodline.com\/2019\/09\/golden-gate-farmers-market-opens-shop-in-old-thom-s-fresh-organics-space\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Golden Gate Farmers Market<\/span><\/a> in the Outer Richmond allowed me to substitute for Roma Tomatoes in my regular marinara sauce, with extraordinary result. On its own, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clinecellars.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Cline<\/span><\/a>\u2019s <strong>2018 Ancient Vines Mourv\u00e8dre<\/strong> stands as a perfectly amiable wine, sourced from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wine-searcher.com\/regions-contra+costa+county\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Contra Costa AVA<\/span><\/a> that produces a number of distinctive Rh\u00f4ne bottlings <em>(though the region does not feature an abundance of wineries, its grapes are highly prized and sourced throughout the North Coast)<\/em>. I easily could have put up my feet and polished off a bottle while watching Netflix, but the food pairing proved utterly transformative. Not in the way one normally thinks of an astounding food-wine blend, the way many Italian wines are made to produce. Rather than balancing the wine, the pasta seemingly changed its character, from the smooth, slightly fruity uniformity I seek in a Mourv\u00e8dre to the rich complexity of a Cabernet Sauvignon. Had I not known what was in my glass, I might even had guessed it was a Meritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, Times; font-size: 12pt;\">I made Pizza Napoletana a couple of night later, using the same sauce. True to form, the pizza exceeded all my previous endeavors, but the wine merely held to its varietal character, however.
